Thanks for allowing me to join, I am an absolute beginner,, I can usually find out how to do something by Google. Not this time I'm afraid lol.

Hi, please can you help me here, I’m an absolute beginner, hope your patience lol. Here goes knitting the back of a babies cardigan.
Dec 1st at each end of 3rd row. Got that, pattern then says
Then at each end of foll 4th row 3 times?? Then at each end of the foll 6th row 2 times
(Typing with a puzzled screwed up face… )dose this mean once I’ve done 4 rows I go back to counting from number 1 again?? I started with 61 stitches and should end up with 49 stitches. I do hope you can help me understand this.
Thank you in advance, and sorry for being stupid.

Welcome to the forum and to knitting!
It’s a very good question and one that is often confusing. The directions are telling you how frequently to decrease (every 4th or every 6th row) and how many time to repeat that decrease (3 times or 2 times).

You’ve decreased at each end of row 3. Continue to dec at each end of rows 7,11 and 15. Then dec at each end of rows 21 and 27. That’s a decrease of 12 sts which takes the stitch count from 61 to 49.
Have fun working the baby cardigan and come back anytime with questions or comments or photos. We love photos of finished projects.

You’re not stupid!
This sort of pattern instruction is really hard to understand at first. It does get easier with practise but it is a really common difficulty and you will see loads of similar questions here in the forum.
Feel welcome to ask as much as you need to.

Thanks for your help, I finally got it right. Thanks again. However I’ve now got another dilemma!! Pattern says, k to marker,sm,k2,yo,ssk,p1,k2tog(all that I understand) it’s the next part.
Yo,k2, sm,k to last 0 St’s k2tog 0 times
Oh my goodness I’m loving this knitting but understanding the pattern is a nightmare.

I’m glad you worked it out and another good question.
This all gets easier the more patterns you work. In some ways it’s like learning a foreign language with several dialects thrown in. You’ll learn with every pattern.

What is the name of your pattern and the designer?
Whenever there is a 0 (or a - or x) for your size, skip that direction and move on to the next. According to the direction you posted, there won’t be any sts after the last slip marker so no stitches to knit or k2tog. Go on to the next instruction.
