Tension Sauare

I’m in the
process of knitting a tension square of 10cm x 10cm to gauge whether the yarn I am using for the pattern, will closely resemble the finished garment size wise. If my square is less than the number stated - I’m told to use a finer needle size? Is this correct? Cheers all.

Welcome to the forum!
Usually the tension square is 10x10cm or 4"x4". If you’re getting a smaller tension square, then you have too many sts/cm and you need to go to a larger needle size. Remember to measure over the middle 10cm of the square (or measure over the middle 5cm and multiply by 2). The edge sts are smaller than the usual stitch and should not be included in a measure of tension.
