Switching colors for striped blanket

I’m a simple knitter but have experience knitting many easy projects. This project seemed easy enough but I havent had to switch colors yet. I’m not sure how to make these transitions… The pattern is a Bernat blanket, In a wink baby blanket.

Do I just start knitting with my new color, but then what happens to the other color? Will there be all kinds of tails or chains of yarn jumping up?

Thank you!

Hu and welcome to the forum.
What a cozy looking baby blanket! You could carry the yarn that isn’t in use up the side of the blanket if you wish. Catch if every other row with the working yarn so that you don’t have large loops of yarn at the edge. This’ll work for the larger stripes too or you could cut the yarn and, yes, weave in all the ends.
If you decide to carry the yarn at the edge, you could crochet a simple border to cover up the carried yarn.

Here’s a video to shop you what I mean about twisting the yarn at the edge to carry it along.
