sweater sleeve cap shaping help - maddy laine #184, men’s jacket cardi

hi all! looking for some mathy/sweatery help here.

i’ve contacted maddy laine’s help email, but i thought i’d post here too just in case. this is my first adult sweater, and it’s for a gift, so any help is greatly appreciated.

cut/paste from email to maddy laine:
"i’m working on size XL of pattern ML184. that’s the 4th set of numbers in each instruction. when i get to the sleeve cap shaping, something is definitely off.

size XL starts with 97 stitches, and then says to bind off 5 at the start of the next 2 rows, leaving one with 87 stitches.

then directions go straight into decreasing 1 stitch at each edge of every alternate row (that would be the right side rows) 12 times. 2 stitches lost each alternate row, multiplied by 12 rows is 24 stitches, subtracted from 87 stitches means at this point i should have 63 stitches. (frustratingly, the pattern doesn’t state a stitch count at this point.)

it then says to bind off 1 stitch at each edge of the next 4 rows. which would be 8 total stitches subtracted from the 63 i should have (but which is unstated), or now 55 total stitches. the pattern instead says 51 stitches are left.

after that it says to bind off 2 stitches at the beginning of the next 4 rows, losing 8 total stitches. this will leave me with 47 stitches to bind off. the pattern instead says 43 are left.

so where is the 4 stitch discrepancy happening. am i misreading the instructions, or are there incorrect repeats or stitch counts? there is no errata for this pattern listed on the maddy laine site, or on ravelry. any help would be appreciated. thank you!"

picture 1 is a screen shot from the directions PDF… picture 2 is my row-by-row instructions written out so i stay on track. the ongoing stitch counts are listed on the right side of each column.

thanks again! 'topher

Hi X! So neatly and carefully worked out. Yup, a pattern mistake. I checked some of the other sizes which seem to be correct but for the 4th size there’s definitely an error.
You could add another dec 1 st at each edge every alt row for a total of 13 times and then another decrease at each edge for a total of 5 times to get to the final number of 43sts.
Alternatively you could probably go with the final number of sts, 47 and bind off but it’ll be interesting to see what the designer suggests.

Great looking cardigan and a fabulous gift.

hi @salmonmac!

thanks for the reply, and for checking my math. the designer did get back to me and yes i/we were correct. the instructions and repeats themselves were right, but her stitch count after was wrong for that 4th size. so it should have read that there was 37 (49, 45, 55, 61) stitches before the last set of decreases. and then 29 (37, 37, 47, 53) stitches left at the end for binding off. unfortunately, she only changed the first part on her website errata page… but i can’t be fixing everybody’s everything, right?

i finished both of the sleeves yesterday and now it’s on to the left and right fronts.

thanks again!

Good to know we can still do arithmetic! Thanks for the update and I hope we get to see a photo when you finish.
