Hi Guys. I have just started sweater no 27 my favourite things knitwear and am having a problem with row no 7 of the first 10 rows. It says to sl1 pulwise with the yarn at back then knit 1 and slip stitch over but this means I am losing half my stitches. Am I reading it wrongly?
That’s indeed a decrease. Could you post the line, exactly as written in the pattern please.
Is this your pattern?

Have you read the following row? Is there perhaps a series of increases which will balance out these decreases?

HI, I was hoping that was the case but it just says purl to end. I can’t see anything in ravelry projects that says there’s anything wrong which makes me think I’m reading it wrongly
Can you quote exactly the row with the decrease and maybe the row before and the row after? The garter stitch rows before and after the pattern stitch seem to be worked without increase or decrease so it’s probably the rows between that balance out the pass slipped stitch over.
It’s a very clever pattern stitch and a lovely sweater.

Perhaps this a “slip one purl wise, yarn over k1” i.e. a brioche stitch? Now I’ve read the pattern I can see this is a way to make a hole then on the next row you do a yarn over where the gap is which you knit as a stitch and work as pattern in the following row. Hope this helps

If you have the pattern, would you quote the entire row from the pattern please? That would be a great help until the original poster, MunchysMum gets back to the forum. Don’t give us any more than a row or two due to designer copyright.

What a pretty stitch pattern! Yes, with all those eyelets, there must be yarn-overs involved somewhere. Maybe the row before?

We can help better if you provide a few rows of the pattern. Maybe the row before and after the one that’s giving you trouble? And that row, of course.
You can take a photo of the page with your phone and add it using the landscape icon next to the smiley face above. Or you can type the rows out, but be sure to type everything exactly as it appears. Punctuation counts in patterns!

Copy/paste!!! It’s fine. The only caveat is not too much of the pattern. I would not type it myself unless if it were the only way I could get it posted. I personally am prone to typing errors and then not catching them when I proofread.

on 29 (31) 31 (33) 33 (35) 35 (35) sts using circular needles 5 mm [US 8] and the long tail cast on method.
Purl 1 row. Next row is a RS row.
Now work back on forth in structure pattern.
The shoulders are shaped by increasing on all rows (ie. both RS and WS rows) as follows:
1st row (RS row): k1, M1L, k to 1 st remaining, M1R, k1.
2nd row (WS row): p1, M1Rp, p to 1 st remaining, M1Lp, p1.
3rd row (RS row): k1, M1L, k to 1 st remaining, M1R, k1.
4th row (WS row): p1, M1Rp, p to 1 st remaining, M1Lp, p1.
5th row (RS row): k1, M1Lp, p to 1 st remaining, M1Rp, k1.
6th row (WS row): p1, M1L, k to 1 st remaining, M1R, p1.
7th row (RS row): k1, M1L, slip 1 purlwise with the yarn in back, k1, pass the slipped st over the just knitted st,
yarn over, repeat to 2 sts remaining, k1, M1R, k1.
8th row (WS row): p1, M1Rp, p to 1 st remaining, M1Lp, p1.
9th row (RS row): k1, M1Lp, p to 1 st remaining, M1Rp, k1.
10th row (WS row): p1, M1R, k to 1 st remaning, M1L, p1.
Work 1st – 10th row 3 (3) 3 (3) 3 (3) 4 (4) times in total.
It’s the 7th row I don’t understand
For row 7:
7th row (RS row): k1, M1L, slip 1 purlwise with the yarn in back, k1, pass the slipped st over the just knitted st, yarn over, repeat to 2 sts remaining, k1, M1R, k1.
The slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, k1, pass slipped st over is the decrease. It is balanced by the next step, the yarn over (bolded) which will add a new loop over the needle. The yarn over creates the eyelets that you see in the pattern stitch.
This knitter has posted a photo of the same section you are working. See the 3rd photo down.
The yarn over is worked by bringing the yarn strand to the front between the needles, then over the right needle to the back. You’ll be then ready to work the repeat again.

Oh my god I completely missed that instruction I feel so stupid. I have read it so many times as well. Thank you so much for that of course it makes sense now and thanks everyone for your help it’s great having such kind people to go to for advice.

Glad to hear you’re back on track. This is what i love about this forum, we’re all in different places but it’s like just sitting and knitting together. We all have someone we can ask when we misread or don’t understand a pattern.

You can copy and paste. It’s fine as long as it’s only a little bit of the pattern, to protect designer copyright. We just can’t post entire patterns, even if they’re free.

I find it often helps to read the problematic instruction out loud. I’m less likely to miss one of these small things that way. Do I always think to do that myself? Not at all.
