Hello,
I am working on my first sweater (!) and have arrived at the neck shaping on the front piece. I have 29 stitches on my needle.
Patten says:
K2tog, K1 and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder.
Work each side of neck separately.
Next row: P2tog
Fasten off.
With RS facing cast off centre 23 sts (one st on right needle after cast off), K0 (0:0:1:0:0), (k2tog) 1 (1:1:0:1:1) times.
Complete to match first side reversing shaping.
In the first part, does once I’ve turned the work, which needle is the ‘rem sts’? The 2 stitches now on the left needle or the remaining 26 on the right needle?
This leads me to my next question… do I only have to P2tog once for the two sts?
What does it mean to complete to match first side reversing shaping?
Thank you from a confused novice knitter.
Carolyn

You have 29 on the needle, when you K2tog, and then k1 you are to turn there. You will put the other 26 sts on the holder. After you do the turn you will have 2 stitches, you purl them together. And cut the yarn and end off.
Then with the right side facing you, you want to cast off 23 of the 26 sts that were on the holder (put them back on the needle to do this). That will leave you with 1st on the right needle and 2 on the left. You should be at the inside corner of the neck shaping (away from the place where the sleeve would be) I think. Then it says to knit the 2 on the left needle together.
As far as completing the shaping to match the other, it seems like you basically have already because it is very short and simple shaping. I guess you would turn at the end and probably purl the 2 together. That doesn’t seem like reverses anything much, since that is the same thing you did on the other side, but if you are on the purl side of the piece when you turn, that is what you should do. Cut and end off again.
This leads me to my next question… do I only have to P2tog once for the two sts?
Yes, because once you purl the 2 together you only have 1 st left and you stop at that point.
It sure seems like not much in the way of neck shaping, but if this is all it has and you copied it correctly, that’s what it says.
