Sweater collars

Hello to all,

How do you calculate the number of stitches to p/u when adding a collar? A video I watched said to pick up through each stitch (no matter what the patterns says) and adjust on following rows, but that is too vague for me. Are there any tips and tricks, websites, etc. that others can share to explain the correct way to p/u stitches for collars, or sleeves.

Thanks,

Jaye

Does your pattern tell you how many stitches to pick up? If so, you can divide your collar into quadrants and pick up the same # of stitches in each quadrant. This will help you space them evenly.

What I’ve always done is:

Measure how many inches you want the collar to be.

Place Markers one inch apart on the fabric.

Say your gauge was 5 stitches per inch, you would knit up 5 stitches between the markers. Same with any other number, like if you got 3 stitches per inch, knit up 3 stitches in between the marker, and so on.

Knit on.

I design my own sweaters, but if you have a pattern, it will tell you how many stitches to pick up. That’s how I’ve always done it with my sweaters. Hope that helps.

Thank you both,

This was one of those things that I was just thinking too hard about!

Glad to help!
