I have never used anything but Encore Plymounth before. What can I make with this??? Remember I am a newbie to knitting. Can I make my shrug out of it??
:knitting: Hiya Nana,
Hun, you have been blessed… OMG yes most definitely knit something out of the alpaca, It’s the next best thing to knitting with cashmere. Sounds like it’s a fingering or maybe even a light sport weight yarn (perfect for sox). If that’s what your shrug pattern calls for is that weight yarn, then go fer it. (don’t ferget to smother yer hubby with kisses for getting this for ya). Heck, ya’ll could find a lovely lacy stole pattern and knit it with bigger needles than is called for on the ball band n have a gorgeous lacy, light as a feather work of art. Have fun!!!
You could check the ballband to see if the manufacturer has a website and maybe they will have some patterns on there too. If not, check out KP’s site. www.knitpicks.com and they should have some patterns there that is compatible with the yarn.:present:
Could also try Ravelry if you’ve got access (or ask someone else if you haven’t) and see what other people have done with it, give yourself some ideas. Lucky find,
I don’t know yet how to figure out how much skiens I would need for any one project. I made a shrug with 5 Skiens of encore plymouth worsted weight 75% acrylic 25% wool 100G(3 1/2 OZ) 200 YARDS using size 6/7 needles, how many would I need if I use this Alpaca that is 10 Skeins (50gr. each)
Recommended Gauge : 7 st/1 Needdle 2 1/2 - 3
Aprox. 118 yards each skein.
To make another shrug just like the one I made will I need to buy more than 10Alpaca skeins ??? My shrug is a very basic pattern, looks like a huge tube with two cuffs.
What does superfine mean? And is this Alpaca Superfine good for Lace Weight Knitting Yarn ??
Hiya nana,
superfine is a grade of alpaca, There’s baby, superfine and fine. It just like eggs kinda…sorta.
Well I wouldn’t use the same pattern that you used for your last shrug with this yarn because it is a different weight yarn. If you were to cast on the same amount of stitches that you did for the one you’ve already made the new one with this yummy yarn would prolly fit a 6 yo. That’s the difference weight and gauge make.
Find a pattern that calls for sport weight or fingering weight yarn. Here’s some ideas from KP’s site http://www.knitpicks.com/shawl,+shrug,+&+wrap+knitting+patterns_PL300206.html
And also try www.knittingpatterncentral.com They have thousands upon thousands of patterns. Just remember to find one that is for your weight yarn.
I would say it’s a lace weight yarn.
Try this capelet: http://www.rainydaygoods.com/lace-capelet/
I have it in my ravelry que and it calls for laceweight yarn.
A tip for working with laceweight though, make sure you have good lighting and a good amount of time to be able to concentrate and follow the pattern. Between the superfine yarn, the needles, and patterns for lace, I find it to be challenging. But in a good way, because the fo is so pretty!
