I am getting frustrated. I picked another yarn, lightweight, and I can’t make the gauge. I need to have 42 stitches and 30 rows to make a 4 inch swatch in rib stitch. I have knit ten rows, and I only have an inch- What can I do to fix this?
What gauge does the new yarn list on the tag or band?
Is it the same top pattern as your earlier post?
The old yarn (Loops and Threads, 21sts/4") was essentially the same gauge as the pattern called for (20sts/4").

It sounds like the new yarn is lighter weight. Stitch gauge is more important for most patterns so you might continue for several more inches and then measure stitch gauge. Patterns usually have you knit a given number of inches rather than rows.
The new yarn is 3 light, and the pattern info says 4 mm needles/30 rows = 4 inches- so I guess I need to go down on needle size to 4 (instead of 4.5). However, I frogged my coachella top and would like to use that yarn (2 fine, + 1 very fine held together)- pattern info for that says 3.5 mm to get a 4 inch swatch- So if I go down a size, then I will need to knit more rows right?
