Substitute triple yarn for single yarn

Hi everyone, I am interested in making Lana Grossa Design 16-Nera 1, it uses L.G. Nebbia with Superkid Seta, 3 strands in total, I would like advice on what weight single yarn I could use instead of the 3 used in the pattern, it doesn’t have to be fuzzy! thank you.

You could try a super bulky which gives about 10sts/4inches or a combination of two aran weight yarns. It’s worth testing out the yarn before you buy the sweater quantity however to make sure the drape is what you want and the knit fabric isn’t too stiff.

Thank you salmonmac, the jumper in the pattern doesn’t look that bulky, as you say I could end up with a very stiff jumper!!!

I can’t advise on specific yarn or even what yarn weight. I do have a little experience of subbing yarn weight on patterns. For instance a fluffy yarn might be worked as a heavier weight on bigger needles because it needs space to fluff out and the fluff fills in the otherwise largish gauge and the yarn itself might look quite thin. Experimenting can be a bit hit and miss though. I have made a DK or worsted weight sweater with fingering weight yarn and it has been lovely, also used DK for a chunky pattern and it made such a nice light fabric with great drape rather than a heavy stiff fabric I might have got wih a heavier yarn. I start with the needle size in the pattern regardless of what wight yarn I want to use, and just see what the resulting swatch looks/feels like, then I change needle size or pattern size if needed so that I don’t end up with a top that is too small or too big. I’ve discovered I like my knits quite a lot more when then are worked on a slightly bigger needle and gauge than was called for in the patterns.

If you have a favorite yarn maybe that’s a place to start? You could double or triple up in a single colour or mix colours or weights together to acheive an individual, one off, fabric that you like.
