Stuck!

Hello folks! I reached out to you a while back and got great advice on a knitting question. I’m back because I am stuck on what might be an error in a pattern or simply my misunderstanding of instructions. I am working on a tiny baby sweater which is knit in moss stitch with a 1 x 1 rib at the bottom. The directions for both the back and the sleeves are: 1st row. *K1,p1,rep from * to last stitch, k1. 2nd row. P1, *k1, p1, rep from * to end. This forms the 6 row rib hem.

Now as I am starting to knit the left front (the pattern is a wrap cardigan) the instructions are throwing me off: 1st row. *K1,p1,rep from * to last stitch, k1. 2nd row. Slp, *p1, k1, rep from * to end. This seems to create a seed stitch. What am I missing? The pattern photo clearly shows the 1 x 1 rib on the from of the cardigan. I’d appreciate any advice. Deborah

What is the name of your pattern and the designer, please? It’s easier to help if we can see the original photos.

Unfortunately there is no real name of the pattern or designer listed. I purchased the pattern from Etsy and it was only described as a Vintage cardigan and socks pattern. I’ll attempt to attach a photo…

The pattern calls for Rico Baby Dream dk Uni yarn. (discontinued, of course) So I am wondering if it was designed specifically for that yarn and may originally have been in a book or pamphlet produced by the yarn company

I contacted the Etsy seller and she only said that it was a popular pattern and was not aware of any errors. Reviews of the seller/pattern via Etsy made no mention of any errata.

Thanks again for any help!

Deborah

The Etsy seller is probably breaking copyright law. It’s a rico pattern.

Very nice looking wrap!

It looks like a possible error. Slipping the first stitch gives the pretty edge which can be seen in the photo but following that you would work the stitches as they present, knit the knits and purl the purls for the rib section.
Or
Slip1, *k1 p1 to end

I did look for errata and although i found page of errata for rico patterns i didn’t find this pattern. You might contact them so you can let them know there is an error. (You might also alert them to the etsy seller)

There is an email address for contact here

And there seems to be plenty of the yarn available here (i have not looked elsewhere)

Thank you so much! This community is amazing … and speedy!

I’ll be sure to keep you posted on my progress. I am very grateful for the help. I am a fairly experienced knitter and was thinking it was an error, but had a crisis in confidence! Thank you!!

This looks great! I started the project using a substitute yarn that I had in my stash, but will keep this in mind for future projects. I am in the US, are you? Have you had luck ordering yarn from the UK?

The instructions seem fine to me. You are in fact starting a moss or seed stitch pattern for the body of the wrap. The rib continues for a total of 6 rows. Then the body stitch pattern begins. Looks like you will be knitting the purls of the previous row and purling the knits of the previous row as you work row 2 of the body.
I’m not sure how the cable pattern is worked whether part of the left front or applied after. You might read ahead and see if you can find directions for the cable.
It’s an adorable pattern but patterns from Etsy are often pirated and unsupported.

I’m in the UK and buy from them, but they are popular internationally and i have seen people in this forum have had success ordering to US. There is a page for delivery costs so just check you’re ok with the pricing before you commit.
I use substituted yarn for just about every project though, if you have yarn more easily available to you which you like then go for that, fewer transport miles too.

I think the question is regarding the very beginning of the front left rather than the transition row. The front having 6 rows of rib before the moss stitch, to match the back and sleeve cuffs.

Yes. That first transition row is where the error in instructions lies. I have made that correction and now the rest of the left front is falling into place perfectly. Thank you friends!!!
