Stuck on a pattern

Hi everyone,

Hope I’ve posted in the correct section!

I’m stuck on a pattern
Sirdar Snuggly 4 ply 4508

I’m not an expert but I’ve followed patterns and made blankets, hats, cardigans etc I even ventured out and made a lovely cabled cardigan for my cousin when he was born.

I’m expecting a baby next year and would love to have this pretty cardigan finished before she arrives!

I just keep getting stuck on a part. I’ve actually restarted 4x and I’m close to giving up. Please can you help?

I end up with 135st
Then when I go onto the first row, I ended up with less than 135sts!

When I checked it by actually calculating how many sts I’d need, I end up using all 135sts.

I get the feeling that I’m doing the yarn forward, slip1 and then knit 1 wrong? Or the yarn forward, knit 1,yarn forward wrong.

It says slip1 knitway which I don’t get.

People online have said its an easy pattern and I’m almost in tears thinking that I’ve lost my way. It’s been 2 yrs since I last knitted!

I even decided to continue to row 3 and ended up with 93sts. I’m definitely going wrong!

If anyone can shed some light or suggest something I’d

be so grateful x

The pattern author is using Yfwd “yarn forward” as an increase. Other patterns would use the terms of yarn over YO, or yarn round needle YRN.

S1, K1, Psso is a decrease. By pairing them the stitch count should remain unchanged.

Thank you, yes that makes sense as when I wrote it out in paper it all counted towards 135sts.

I’m definitely doing something wrong when I yarn over.

If you wouldn’t mind, please could you explain or correct me in the following.

  1. When yfwd, k1, yfwd. Do I keep the yarn in front when trying to do a knit? As in does the yarn twist around from the front to do that I can do a knit?
  2. When doing a yfwd, s1 (knitwise), k1. After I do a yarn forward and take out the slip1, do I bring the yarn to the back to do a knit or should it again twist around?

I hope that makes sense, apologies if it doesn’t. I’ve done leave patterns before so I’m really stunned that it’s not working out for me.

Yfwd (also YO, YON, YRN) form a single wrap of the yarn around the right needle as an increase. Here is what you do.

Bring the yarn to the front between the needles. Then over the top of the right needle to the back.

Thank you so much for replying and for finding videos that help.

The mistake I was making was due to watching two different YouTube video and one wasn’t showing the yarn forward properly.

I’ve managed to work it out and now I’m really happy. I’ve past the part I was stuck on and I’m currently repeating the pattern.

Looking so much better than before.

Thank you once again for your help and your time
