Strange bind off instructions

I can’t figure out how to follow this instruction for a bind off row

“Bind Off Row: Knit, * bind off 5 sts, yo, rep from * across, binding off all sts as you go.”

Can anyone help??

It seems like you would treat the YO like a stitch and pass it over in the bind off process like you would normally…

That’s what it sounds like to me, but it does seem odd. Do you have a link to the pattern? Or a photo?

I saw a similar bind off for a cowl neck sweater, those directions specifically said to bind off the YO - it was something like bind off 2, YO, bind off YO, bind off 1, YO, bind off YO, repeat from *.

It’s one way of creating a loose, stretchy BO.

sue

I thought that was the reason, especially when I saw it on a cowl neck. Does it create any type of pattern, Sue, with the YOs in there? I figure it doesn’t make a lacy hole like a regular YO since there’s no next row to “open it up”, but does it look like a regular bind off?

That’s a BO I like. No holes being the yo is immediately BO. Yes, looks like reg BO…BUT if you were to do the yos every other BO it would get a bit ‘rick racky.’ (Which might be applicable in some cases.) The YO BO allows for you to place the yos wherever you feel necessary for the amount of desired stretch.

cam

Thanx, Cam! So this would be feasible for maybe a toe-up sock? Always a problem if the the bind off is too tight there - although doing every other would essentially double my amt of bind off st, and may be too loose then. But every other would probably work - maybe I’ll try that on my next toe-up!
