Stocking - Heel Gusset

I started working on a Christmas stocking last year and I got stuck, so I stopped. Picked it up again recently to try to finish it and I just can’t get started on the heel gusset!

The heel of the stocking is a different color than the leg. The step that I’m on now says to use the main color and an empty needle to pick up stitches along the right edge of the heel flap. The thing I’m hung up on is, I left the main color where I finished the stocking leg. So if I just pull the yarn from there to the right edge of the heel flap, it goes across the opening of the stocking… Does this make sense? The pattern never said to cut the yarn where I finished the leg (but it did specify to cut at another spot where I changed colors).

Help please if you can!

This is the e-book with the pattern I’m using, and I’m at ‘Knitting the Gusset’ on page 35: http://books.google.com/books?id=kSc0AAAAQBAJ&pg=PA35&lpg=PA35&dq=using+mc+and+an+empty+needle,+pick+up+and+knit+along+right+edge+of+heel+flap+9+sts&source=bl&ots=Sw1qQWDcoN&sig=97shKbj25PogbdkTvxmr72xkM5A&hl=en&sa=X&ei=pJ2iUsyeDMSikQfi_oGQDA&ved=0CDwQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=using%20mc%20and%20an%20empty%20needle%2C%20pick%20up%20and%20knit%20along%20right%20edge%20of%20heel%20flap%209%20sts&f=false

Welcome to KnittingHelp!
It looks like you’ll have to cut the yarn in order to pick up the sts along the heel flap and then knit across sts on needle 2, then 3 and pick up sts on the other side of the heel flap. Thjs will keep the orientation of the needles as described in the pattern and the instructions that follow.

Thank you so much for your help! I figured that was what I needed to do, but I was afraid of making that cut and then messing something up! I was able to finish the stocking and I’m really proud of it! Starting stocking #2 last night!

Terrific! We’d love to see a photo if you’d like to post one.
