It’s late so maybe my brain is not working. Ok am making a sun hat, the body of the heat start out in stockinette stitch for 3inches. Then I am suppose to decrease using knit together so then all my rows are not knitting .PROBLEM is that in knitting all the row,am getting bump(horizontal) on the the smoothnes(vertical) side.
When I did the 3 inches of stockinette stitch I stop on the knit side. The hat is suppose to be wearn where the vertical side is shown.
First, are you knitting flat, back and forth, or in the round? It appears the pattern is written for in the round. I don’t know why you’d be switching from stockinette to what sounds like garter stitch because of decreasing. Maybe because it’s late, I’m misreading your post.
As I’m reading the pattern, GG, it is knit in the round, and one problem that I’ve noticed that crops up while I knit is that the wrong side usually shows outward, so it may be that you just need to turn the hat so that the knit stitches are facing outward. To the OP (original poster) if you could post a pic, we can see what may be the problem.
You may have picked up the knitting and inadvertantly flipped it so that you’re knitting on the inside of the circle as Rorshach mentioned. If that’s it, it may be easiest to pull the hat brim through the circle formed by the needle and continue knitting on the ourside. (this is like turning a sleeve inside out.)
If you’ve picked up the hat and started back in the wrong direction, then you’ll leave a small hole and be working on the wrong side. For this you need to tink back to the mistake and start knitting in the correct direction, on the outside of the hat.
Thanks for all the replies.I will attach a pic. I am not sure what I did wrong I end on the purl side and starting my decrease in knit. In the attach pic I already pull the stitches cause then I would have horizontal bumps on the smooth side. If I pull the hat from the the needle to start work on the wrong side how will I move the working yarn string.:hair: oh my brain has so left the building.
The pattern is written to be worked in the round. You would cast on the required sts and then join to knit in the round on a small enough circular needle that all your sts fit comfortably. There are other techniques for small diameter circular knitting on the Free Videos tab, under Advanced Techniques.
That’s what I thought. It’s the only way I could figure out that you would “stop on the knit side.” I think your hat can still be finished but with a modification or two.
When you knit in the round your stitches are joined together after you cast on. If you look at the pattern it says to join in the round right after telling you how many to cast on. To do stockinette in the round, you won’t be turning your work so every round will be knitted. You won’t purl.
How to save your hat? Undo your last knit row and work it again with the first decreases. OR go ahead and purl a row then work the decreases after you turn to do the next knit row. You’ll work all your decreases on the knit side. I don’t think a round or two more or less will make a lot of difference on this hat. When you’ve done your decreases, check back and get help with finishing off the last stitches and seaming your hat.
If other, more experienced knitters have a different way to make this work for you, I would pay attention to them
Any day we can learn something new is a good day! I learn something new about knitting just about every day. I think you could finish the hat flat and seam it. If you prefer to rip it out and start over, that’s OK too. Either way, as you said, you’ve learned something new. :yay:
