Stitches crossing over each other... what am I doing wrong?

I’m new to knitting, and enjoying it already although I’m still learning. But I keep making the same annoying mistake, and I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.

For some reason, now and then I get two stiches that cross over each other in a v… I’m attaching a picture so you can see what I mean. As you can see, I only needed to knit one row to make the mistake

I’m sure it’s some kind of really common mistake, but I’ve had no luck googling for an answer so far. If only I knew exactly what I’m doing wrong when it happens, I would know what to watch out for

I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me

That happens because you didn’t fully slide the old stitch off the needle. When you get to it on the next row, just lift the old stitch over the loop on the needle and you’ll be back in business.

Ah, thank you… I knew it probably had something to do with not paying enough attention  Actually I’ve had an issue with “stabbing” the stitches, I’m thinking maybe I’m using needles that are too thick for the yarn I’m using?

Some yarns are more splitty than others. Needle size shouldn’t be an issue.
