Saw this rather lovely cardigan in a shop today, instead of buying it, I immediately thought, I wonder if I can knit something similar….I know this would be machine knitted but I’m wondering what the main stitch is, or equivalent in hand knitted? I thought it looked like a broken rib but what do others think??
It looks like brioche stitch or fisherman’s rib depending on how it’s worked. It is indeed a good-looking cardigan.
It’s a great looking cardigan. I like the colour changes and especially like the increases/decreases which break up the fabric with some detail. There are lots of tutorials on how to work brioche or fisherman’s rib, including those increases/decreases and colour changes.
This cowl could be a good practice piece it’s got some lovely colour detail
I made a section of sweater in fisherman’s rib and really enjoyed working it. It was new to me and took some watching of videos to get it but it was really fun and easy once I understood it. I did only make a rectangular shape, no shaping, which adds difficulty and I hope to do one day.
Depending how much designing and calculation you want to do you could start with a pattern and adapt the stripes
Ahhh fisherman’s rib! That looks about right - I’ve made a scarf in two colour brioche before but not worked in fisherman’s rib stitch so will definitely have a play around. Thank you for the pattern ideas, the cowl looks a great place to start while I ponder on a whole cardigan design. ![]()
I like that! I was thinking brioche as well, but either way it’s an interesting pattern.
