Still needing help on socks

I am working on these sockshttp://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter02/PATTstraightlaced.html and am having trouble.

I am on the gussets. I have done the heel turn and picked up the 17stitches. It says to swith to second needle and continue in lace patt across instep sts. The only problems is I am not at the beginning of the second needle in order to knit the stitches. I am in the middle of the cable and for the life of me I can not figure out what I am doing wrong. I have frogged several times and apparently keep doing the same thing.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

complete the second heel, (and then that sock will be at the end of the needle…

turn, work instep (sock1) and instep (sock 2)
then turn the work again, and pick up gusset 2 (sock 2) and gusset 2, (sock1)

and then continue in the round…

the sole and gussets will be worked in stocking knit (the gussets will be decreased) the instep will be worked ‘in pattern’
