So I saw a shoulder button shawl I liked (on a movie). So I looked for something similar and located one on ravelry called”seaglass shoulder cozy by Elizabeth Finn. It says sport weight yarn and I haven’t found the yarn they used but several projects showed using cotton yarn. It calls it a summer garment but with fall colors maybe in a self striping I think it will be ok for Texas weather. So since I haven’t located more specifics about yarn I can’t use yarn sub. Any suggestions. I’ll include a picture of the initial shawl I liked
Sport weight yarn
That sounds like an excellent idea. I’ve used Catania Solids for a raglan top. I wore it just the other day. I love it. I think it would work well in this project. I did buy mine cheap from LIttle Knits. If they have it when I buy yarn again I’ll probably get more. I would give you the link to Little Knits but then I’d have to test it to be sure it works and that would lead to free shipping, assuming it’s still a thing.
Thanks. The other thing that doesn’t sound correct is if it’s sport weight which I think is a #2, then how can the gauge say 5 stitches is 4 inches on #8 needles. I think I must be looking at this wrong. Moving on then can I use any #2 weight yarn. I realize that it doesn’t need to be so exact since it’s a shawl but I need to know how much to get.
The best I can offer on how much yarn is to buy at least one more than you think you’ll need. Others are better at this kind of thing than I am. As for gauge I’d have to swatch.
The difference in gauge between sport weight estimated in stockinette stitch and the pattern gauge is that the 5sts/4" is in the pattern stitch. That stitch is really a very lacy openwork stitch. As GG recommends however, a gauge swatch will help out here although the gauge will be forgiving.
It’s a lovely wrap and should be perfect for warmer weathr.
Well I think I found a yarn that might work. It’s sport weight, 55% cotton and it’s variegated. It Yarn Art Jeans splash #943. Since I’m not sure about amount I need, I’m getting an additional ball than what the yardage was recommended. They said 328 yards. Each skein of this yarn is 174 yards. I’m going to get 4 skeins. It won’t break the bank. I like the colorway. It’s sort of in line with the original shawl that started this whole search. Once again, all I can do is give it a shot.
All I can say is, ooooooooooooooooooh. This will be be beautiful.
That looks beautiful and I like that it’s a blend. I find that many 100% cotton yarns tend to be heavy even at the thinner yarns. This will be a fun project to work!
Thanks, I am excited for the yarn to come in and get started. I haven’t started anything new in awhile and nothing for me but finishing two projects for my granddaughter so a new project is always exciting.
