I made some ankle socks for myself and my sister using DK weight yarn (btw, what does “DK” mean?). They came out great, but they are pretty thick. So, I wanted to make her another pair using fingering weight yarn. However, I don’t have enough of any of my yarn in fingering weight to make 2 socks. I do have some Lionbrand Microspun that I think could work if I split the plies. There are 6 plies currently. I’m thinking of spliting it down to 3 plies for each sock. Do you think this would work? I wasn’t really planning on buying any more yarn at the moment, but I will if I have to.

I think DK means ‘double knit’.
Seems a bit tedious to go through and split the plies of all that yardage. I guess if you’re a spinner it may work; but that’s an aweful lot of work to do on a total gamble.
It’s only a pair of socks and they don’t require a whole lot of yarn, so I’d just buy more yarn. (Also consider your dye lot too. If you have to buy a new dye lot, alternate lots within the sock, so that difference can be hidden - that way, you won’t end up with two different color socks.

I’ve split plies to get a yarn I could use and it is hard and for that much would be a bit crazy. 
Lion Brand Microspun is not the best sock yarn either so I don’t know if it would be worth the trouble. I think you would be happier with some new yarn.
Thank you. That’s what I was thinking. But, any excuse to buy more yarn will do! 
I’ve used Microspun a lot. No, dividing the 6 plies into 3-ply halves will not be the right gauge substitute for dk weight requirements.
However, the [B]true test[/B] is: [B]knit a gauge swatch[/B] with the 3 plies.
If you can make it work with a certain size needle, more power to ya!
And report back to us. We are dying to know! 
My hope is that 3 plies will be fingering weight. The 6 plies are very close to DK weight. Perhaps if I get some time I’ll try it this weekend. I’ll keep you posted!
Okay - doesn’t work. I started to split the yarn and it just became such a tedious project (and stupid) that I stopped it before it got too crazy. I’ll buy more yarn. Yeah me!!!
