anyone know of actual patterns for this style blanket:
http://yarnloopie.blogspot.com/2008/08/im-yarn-chunkie.html 1st picture , also seen here http://salihan.com/2010/self-striping-sock-yarn/ 2nd picture.
it says the technique can be done in a circular or square spiral, but no actual patterns, so any help would be appreciated. have a bundle of variegated/self-striping cushy yarn i got as mill ends, in beautiful seattle seahawks blues/greens/silvers and am thinking of this blanket for my mom’s cousin who’s a huge fan.
It reminds me of the log cabin blanket that ArtLady made awhile back. This is the pattern and there’s a link to her variation at the bottom of the column of photos on the left.
There are similar patterns here too:

Anyone know of actual patterns for this style blanket:
It is referred to as a ten-stitch blanket, pinwheel blanket or spiral blanket. There are MANY patterns for it.
It can be done in a square…
or a circle…
It can be accomplished via knitting…
see all above
or crocheting…
A log-cabin style blanket is different as the stripes/strips are made separately, with different color yarns, and later seamed together. The ten-stitch/pinwheel blanket is made in one piece, by picking up sts as you go, and therefore, requires no seaming.
thanks for the replies, sal and rochester… hadn’t thought of it as a “pinwheel.” once i used that term, and “10-stitch” as well, on ravelry a whole host of designs came up. they included those specific ones you both pointed out, with patterns (that aren’t supposed to be complex, but somehow are like advanced theoretical calculus, but i digress…) and others that all had their own quirks and variations. will muddle through now that i know what i’m looking for/at. thanks again
Ten Stitch Blanket Tutorial
I’m so glad you asked about this. I’m watching the video I linked to, there is a link on the page to the pattern. There is a Log Cabin tutorial on the same page that I’m going to watch next. Thanks!
Yeah, that. Lol. I made the zigzag one & it’s my family’s favorite blanket.

Who wouldn’t love it? It’s a gorgeous blanket with a great choice of color tints. Very nicely done.
eek! seriously, had to watch the half-hour verypink.com tutorial multiple times WHILE knitting… watch a minute, pause, do the work, watch another minute, pause again, do some more work, etc etc… but have finally turned the 1st and 2nd corners… and am now about to start attaching to the original 18 rows, creating the ridge… pictures attached for posterity
Looking good! The striping is working out wonderfully.
ok, picked up that 1st side, ready for another corner… now that it’s coming together, i’m feeling OK that i gave up mountain biking today to do this
That looks really good. I’m impressed. It took me more than one attempt to get my head around doing those 2 corners.
GG-- this is my 5th attempt, and even tho it’s going well, i’m still using the printed pattern row-by-row for every corner shaping, plus have the verypink.com tutorial video on standby for backup – X
What would we do without the internet? I’ve used so many tutorials and done just the same as you.
BTW I’m working on a project that is only knits and slip stitches. I got to thinking about what can you do without purling. Soon I’ll post a picture. I’m getting close to finishing.
Looks great! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
it was bound to happen - having issues here.
attached two pix in the hope somebody has an idea. first pic shows how far i’ve completed: initial cast on, knit, first corner, immediate 2nd corner, knit and attach to original knit side, 3rd corner, knit and attach to cast on, ready for 4th corner.
but, second pic shows i’m getting these loose loops where i’m attaching straight garter stitch rows to the original cast on. i’m not getting super defined ridges, which is ok, because i’m using needles larger than suggested for the yarn, but still don’t want loosey goosey loops like this.
i think it has something to do with the PSSO? i’d hate to frog, yet again, but maybe i just need to frog back the rows immediately after the corner, to be able to reattach to the cast on stitches, and do it tighter/better? anyway, if there are ideas for tightening those up, and how to avoid going forward, i’m all ears.
thanks, X
(oh, the folded post-it note is where my cast on is, and the 2nd pic just has the work folded under itself, so the loose stitches are visible)
I couldn’t get the slipped stitches as she did them to work for me. thinking Yeah, I never slipped the first stitch of every row, that made mine a mess. I’m not sure what is happening for you. My efforts have long since been ripped out so I can’t go back and look. There’s nothing wrong with the pattern, I just decided I didn’t really care for it.
I posted my knits only Dishrag Tote Bag FOto in What’cha Knittin’ if you want to see what I did without purling.
i saw it, great job! bookmarked the blog where you got the pattern. looks like she’s got some interesting stuff.
Slipping the first or the last stitch of the row should help with the loose loops. It stretches the edge stitch so that it covers two rows and that often helps.
Does it happen atevery edge or is it something to do with the cast on edge?
it happened with every row, starting right after that 2nd turn, where the new rows connect to the original 18 rows. but, i had my cast-on tail that i could have used in a mattress stitch to gather and tighten things up, so i wasn’t too worried…
until it kept happening once i rounded the 3rd corner and it happened on the whole next straightaway where the new rows connect to the cast-on stitches… and if the whole thing was going to be like that, i wasn’t going to be happy. so, i frogged it all… did it quick, like a band-aid, and told myself it was ok to try, try again…
and have already worked it back to the end of the 2nd turn, so now i’m ready to connect up the side with the original 18 rows again. i even went to the trouble of putting in stitch markers on each of the 9 holes i need to connect to, just in case.
nothing in the pattern (or errata i could find) or the half hour verypink.com tutorial mentions anything about it… just “poke the needle in, make a stitch, PSSO, and voila” so i’m perplexed…
