Spike Stitches?

Hello all; I’m fairly new at knitting and absolutely love this site. I’m not sure at all if this is the right place to be asking this question, but I was curious as to if anyone knew what type of stitches or whatever those raised ‘horns/scales’ were (Aka: how to do them) on the Merino Aligator/Dragon scarfs I keep seeing advertised on this site? I kinda want to make a stuffed dinosaur for a friend or a dino hat for a kid, but I have absolutely no idea how to make triangular spikes on my knitted work without doing them separately and then sewing them together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven’t seen the patterns, but maybe you co a few stitches, knit them for a row or two, then bind off…?

Sounds interesting. I’m starting to think that they are a type of ruffle that just gets manipulated. Guess I’m just going to have to purchase the kit from Merino. It’s too bad they don’t just offer the pattern for their alligator scarves, but then again, I’ve never tried their yarns and they may be really cool.
