Specific pattern help with hat: confused regarding dec instructions

Hi,
I’m a fairly recent knitter, but am enjoying the challenge, and have progressed onto a lacy hat using a free pattern with the instructions below. It’s taken me an age, as I am very slow(!) and had to unpick more then once…but I have got to the bit after the first decrease row, with a stitch count of 106.
It’s the next bit I don’t understand, especially the instructions I’ve put in italics. I figure I’ve decreased by 48, so another two lots of that would get me to 10, but that wasn’t just yarnovers, it was also the k2tog stitches?
Also, row 4 is the purl, so although I know how to decrease that, do I still do another wave pattern row or what?
I appreciate the pattern was free, but would really like to finish it off now I’ve got this far so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Debbie

Instructions
Note: When decreasing, ensure that the number of sts decreased corresponds with the number of yarn overs. Where this is not possible, work K1 instead.

Wave Lace Stitch Pattern:
Row 1 (RS): k1, *k2tog 3 times, (k1, yo) 6 times, k1, k2tog 3 times; rep from *, k1
Rows 2 and 4: p all sts, including yo’s
Row 3: k

CO 154 sts. Purl 1 row.
Work Wave Lace Stitch Pattern.
When work meas 6.25" (16 cm) ending with Row 4 completed, dec on Row 1 by omitting all yo’s - 106 sts
Cont in pat and dec every 4th row 2 more times - 10 sts

Welcome to KH!
It’s going to take working the pattern rows 1-4 several more times. Omitting the yarn overs means the k2tog stitches aren’t balanced so you get the stitch decreases instead of maintaining the full pattern. Since the stitch number has decreased you won’t have the 19sts required in the repeat on subsequent rows.

Decrease by working the decreases on row 1, again omitting the yarn overs. When you get to the point where you don’t have enough sts to work all the k2tog repeats just work a knit stitch in place of them.

Use the rib pattern that has formed between the lace sections as a guide to the repeats. It is a good idea to place markers between the original pattern repeats to keep this part of the pattern.
So for Row 1 you would have a k1, Marker, *k2tog 3 times, (k1, yo) 6 times, k1, k2tog 3 times; rep from *, Marker, k1

That makes a lot more sense to me, so the decreases are from both the k2tog and omitting the yarnovers, and they need spacing out more evenly to try to follow the original pattern where possible?
I think I’ve got the idea, thank you so much for your help.

Debbie

Yes, that’s what it looks like. If you were to keep doing the yarn overs, they would compensate for the decreases and the hat top wouldn’t draw in at all. Eliminating the yarn overs, let’s the decreases shape the top of the beret.
Taking this slowly is a good way to knit it. It’s going to be beautiful and I hope we get to see a photo when you finish. It’ll take washing according to the yarn ball band the then blocking with maybe a plate inside to open up the lace pattern till it dries.
