I am going to be knitting a sweater so I made a gauge swatch. I knit it in the round. I noticed that there seems to be to much space between the stitches resulting in an unattractive fabric. I hoped washing it would help but it didn’t really. Any thoughts on what might be causing this so I can adjust? I did go up a needle size compared to what the pattern suggested as I’m usually a tight knitter.
What is the name of your pattern and designer? It may also help to know the yarn that you used.
Are you getting the pattern gauge? Have you tried working the swatch with a size smaller needles? It could also be that the yarn is too fine for this pattern gauge and so even though you may be on gauge, the knit fabric is too loose and the sts too spaced out.
I get this when the needle is too big. Sometimes I want the fabric to be open but sometimes not.
If going down a needle size takes you off gauge (too many stitches per 10 cm) you might be able to work a different size in the pattern, following the stitch count for a larger size to produce the smaller size.
You may be a tight knitter on straight needles, and have a different tension on circulars or DPNs.
