Socks on 2 circulars question

I recently taught myself to knit 2 socks on 2 circs from the book “Knitting Circles Around Socks” I had no trouble teaching myself this method. I have used the patterns from the book adding different stitches from “Sensational Knitted Socks” to add visual interest to the socks I have made for myself.

I am now knitting my son a pair of Twin Rib socks from the SKS book using 2 circs. I have run into a problem with turning the heel. The “Knitting Circles Around Socks” book has you begin the heel turn with a knit row and the SKS book (pages 45-46) has you begin with a purl row. If I begin with the purl row I cannot knit the second sock after picking up the gusset stitches because the socks are not in the right order on the needles. Do I just end the heel flap on a purl row and knit the first row of the heel turn using the opposite stitch in the directions? i.e pattern reads Row 1 (WS); Sl 1, P20 sts, P2 tog, P1, turn. Row 2: Sl 1 K4, ssk ,K1, turn. Do I knit the purls and purl the knits. I tried this once an had an extra stitch, I am not sure if I made a mistake or if the count comes out different if you do the opposite.

I am so frustrated. I am flying tomorrow and want to have these heels turned so I can do the gusset and the rest of the sock in the airport and on the plane.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. If I can get this figured out I will then figure out how to post a picture and show off the finished socks. Diane

I would just set them both up for a knit row…once you have knitted them and ready to go back on purl start the turn following those numbers…the heel turn shouldn’t be in ribbing but St st…so you would purl the WS and knit the RS…
