Sock Pattern Question -sizing

I went to my LYS wanting to make my first pair of socks (house socks for dh-thick and warm). The woman suggested Cascade 220 and the Ann Norling Adult Basic sock pattern. What I don’t understand is that there are no sizes. It says that “the length of the foot determines the fit of the sock (9”-13")". It then give 3 sets of numbers for 3 different gauges: fingering, DK, and worsted. So I cast on the worsted number using size 7 dpn’s. I knit a few rows of ribbing and stretched the stitches out on the needles as far as they would go and I could barely get MY foot in it. My dh wears a men’s size 10.5-11 XW. I wear a women’s size 7.5 M (the equivalent for those non-Americans would be a men’s 5.5). There is no way we wear the same size sock. Is this just a bad pattern or is there something I am not understanding?

okay, so I just read the pattern and you adjust the length to be what you want but I still don’t think he could get his fat foot through the ribbing.

I’m not familiar with the pattern. It does seem odd that the number of cast-on stitches isn’t different for men and women; length isn’t the only thing that determines the fit of a sock! For my dh’s socks, if I’m using worsted, I cast on 48 stitches, use size 6 dpns, and his fit just fine. You might play with the math of the pattern a bit to make the sock bigger. (I also use 48 stitches for my socks, but I use smaller dpns–3.25s or something like that.)

That’s so funny, I had decided to go with the DK numbers instead of worsted to see if the fit was better and it casts on 48. Thanks!

I hope it works!!
