Sock knitting

I am trying to learn toe-up sock knitting and I have a lovely pattern for knee socks, but the directions for starting the toe I couldn’t master, so I have learned a cast-on that I can do and I want to incorporate it into the pattern that I have. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

What is the name of your pattern and what cast on are you planning to use?

Congratulations! Generally, you cast on then proceed with the pattern. I use the Turkish cast on. I cast on 12 stitches on two needles then start knitting! I use two 16-inch needles, so it might be different if you’re using Magic Loop, one short circular, or four or five DPNs. Turkish cast on using two needles results in 24 stiches in the round. Some cast-on methods are more difficult on different needle setups, so that could be part of your previous problem. You can search for various cast-on methods on YouTube. It’s been a great help to me. I can possibly give more advice when I know what cast on you are using and what sock pattern you are using. I have a “recipe” for my socks and just change the stitch pattern used for the texture.

Also, there are different toe shapes. I cast on 12 x 2 for a more rounded toe. The Turkish cast on I started with only cast on 4 x 2 which gives a narrow and squarish tip. You might also look at knitgrammar.com and knitfreedom.com.

Hello:

I have a Ravelry pattern called Anne Diamond Knee Socks by Star Athena, which has a lace diamond pattern on the leg.

I am using Berroco Comfort Sock yarn. I obtained my gauge, using 2.75 mm needles and was trying to learn how to learn the provisional cast-on (I did that), but when it came to the description of how to shape the toe, and what the finished result was supposed to look like, I simply got lost.

After searching and searching the internet for a different toe, I finally found a cast-on called Double Knitting found on LetsKnit2gether youtube channel, which I was able to do, but now I have two needles with 12 stitches on each needle and I don’t know how to do a toe.

I just download a pattern by Lia Gatt called Fingering Weight Toe-Up Socks for Magic Loop, would I be able to use this pattern for the toe shaping using my Double Knitting cast-on and the heel, then the diamond leg pattern for the rest of the sock.

I truly look forward to hearing if you can help me.

I never follow patterns when knitting socks. I always begin my toe up socks with Turkish cast on. In the beginning I do increases every round and then gradually every second round and the last round(s) every third round. This gives a bit rounder toe. The place where I do the increases vary: sometimes traditionally on both side of the toes, sometimes spread out, sometimes alternating between a few points, all according to my mood.

When knitting toes you only need two things: Turkish cast on (or provisional cast on or Judy’s magic cast on, or something else) and an increase of choice. With those two you can experiment to create a toe you want and that you think would fit the pattern you want to continue with. I have certainly been experimenting a lot and many times I have ripped the toes and begun over until I got what I want.

The double knitting cast on starts at about 4:00min here:

If you’ve used double pointed needles to work the cast on you can start knitting in the round by knitting across the upper needle as shown in the video. When you get to the end of the first needle, rotate the needles so that you can continue knitting across the second needle.
An alternative is to transfer the stitches to the circular needle that you are going to use for magic loop. Liat Gat has a video for starting magic loop:

The pattern for toe up socks from Liat tells you how to shape the toe to begin the sock.

Hello again:
I now have my two sock toes on the dpns, thanks to all your support. I used the LetsKnit2gether tutorial to cast on in the Double Knitting way. Yes, it is one that I was able to master.

The toe stitches though do look a tad loose. Is there a way to tighten these up?

Sorry for the huge picture!

@Liltylady I typed a longer reply on the forum then it crashed! Yes, you can use Liat’s pattern for the toe through heel then switch to the Diamond Lace pattern. I didn’t get the number of stitches you’re using, so check that when you switch and see if you have the same or need to adjust. Liat’s toe is a bit narrow and squarish. Knitgrammer.com has a rounded toe you can substitute.

#engblom We are two peas in a pod! You might like knitgrammer.com. She has several toe options. I use her rounded toe.

Thank you for that tip about going to Knitgrammer. I have both toes completed now and I am working on the foot. I ended up using dpns and a provisional cast on of 12 sts = 6 for each needle, then st st for 4 rows and then putting on my sts on 3 dpns. I used the Rounded Barn Toe pattern.
Again, thank you for your help! By the way, I have 56 sts on the needles.
