I finally made it to Walmart last night and all the Caron SS was gone. Not one skein to be found anywhere, and it was replaced withā¦Nothing! The racks were all empty and all the other yarn was marked as clearance, so I donāt know if theyāre getting rid of it all together or replacing it with something else. I love Caron SS and now will have to drive over an hour to get it. We have a Joannās, but they donāt really have anything besides Red Heart SS and Lion Brand Homespun. Sometimes it really sucks living in the middle of nowhere. hehe. The fabric section in Walmart seemed fine, so maybe theyāre just replacing stuff, but itās still upsetting.
So I found out what's going into the walmart yarn selection
I bought my sewing desk at walmart, it was the best deal around. Iāve gone there a few times for needles etc though most times I go to joannās for crafty things. Micheals always makes me mad.
I stopped at my wm today. The clearance yarn is now stuffed into 1 shopping cart, it was in 2 on the weekend. They also still have some on the shelves thatās marked down. There were some colors of the new Vannaās and SS Eco yarns. Nice colors, and they felt very nice too.
Iāve gone to Wal-Mart on occasion when Iām really desperateāonly store with knitting stuff open when I get out of workābut here in Maine even the āsuperstoresā donāt have much of a selection. I thought I liked their Chinese-made knockoffs of Clover Takumi needles until I tried the real thing! The Chinese version is softer (the cats can really sink their teeth in), and one of mine even has a splinterā¦
I suppose Iāll check in at some point to see what they have for new stuff, but yāknow I donāt need any yarn right now! Iām also planning a trip to the nearest LYS (about 40 miles one way)āI went to a ārealā yarn shop in Vermont last month and wanted to take the whole place home with me!
Mine already has the new colors of Caron Simply Soft in stock. Itās a new kind of SS - āEcoā, which has been made (partly) with recycled post-consumer plastic bottles. A little less shiny than regular SS, still very soft, and the colors are more muted and a bit heathered.
Yeah, great yarn is scarce in central Maine. I used to drive to Portland all the time ā Michaelās & AC Moore, but liked what Craftmania in Auburn carried. I heard about some great LYS in Portland after I moved away. :Sigh:
Wal-mart here is still carrying the Caron SS, but it takes a while for things to change here (from what I hear), and the Bernat baby stuff. I would like to see the new colors of SS. Iām not interested in the Vannaās choice, after what I saw when it was at JoAnnās ā I think itās rough like Red Heart.
I told my dh on the way home from school and he actually went āIsnāt that exclusive to Joannsās?ā and then said "Oh my god, i canāt believe i just said that.[/QUOTE
That is so funny. It shows he is paying attention to you, though.
Mason, Iāll second Chrisās comment. You are in peril of being voted out of āSurvivor: Macho.ā :roflhard:
Funny, KnittinaMitchie, my wife just told me the same thing that your man told you.
:roflhard: Isnāt it easy for them to notice when they trip over it?
Last time at Michaelās, DW was reluctant to help me select yarn. When I finally met up with her again at the checkout (5 minutes before closing) I was able to show her a sweater pattern that would use up the Bernat Denim-Rag that I have if only I could match it to two more solid colors. Her comment, āoh, why didnāt you tell me that before.ā  Because I hadnāt yet found a pattern book with menās sweaters, but I had told her I was looking for yarn to go with the denim-rag (I even showed her the last skein of it there in the bin).
For a super sized warehouse, Wal-Mart has a dismally small yarn selection. Michaels has a biger selection but its all in baby or girly colors and fluff! I guess neither Wally nor Michael think men make or receive yarn goods.
I think the nearest LYS is over 30 miles away. Itāll cost me two gallons in gas just to get there and then back home. Thatās shoots my yarn budget.

we have Vannas choice in Michaels & Hobby Lobbys here
Vannaās is not my yarn of choice either, although I would knit with it before the Red Heart. I pretty much stick to HLās I Love This Yarn, which Walmart doesnāt carry. The CSS is nice too. Iāll have to watch for the new colors.
Found this on Ravelry-
When you write to Caron to ask about the change, this is the letter you get:

Dear Consumer,

Many of you have noticed that our Simply Soft yarn is being removed from the shelves at your local Wal-mart, and have questions about this move. Please allow us to provide a brief explanation of what is happening.
Several months ago, the managers of the Wal-mart craft area decided to make some changes. One of these changes was to replace standard Simply Soft with an eco-friendly version that is named Simply Soft Eco. This is an environmentally friendly yarn that uses 20% regenerated plastic bottles as a component. This will help eliminate those plastic bottles from reaching landfills, and is consistent with Wal-martās desire to clean up our environment.
Simply Soft Eco is a 4-ply worsted weight yarn that can be used as a substitute in patterns calling for Simply Soft. The color line is similar, but not the same as our standard Simply Soft. The look and feel of the yarn is quite nice. We feel certain that you will enjoy using this yarn, and helping with the clean-up of our planet.
As information, our standard Simply Soft is NOT being discontinued, and can still be found in many retailers such as Michaels, AC Moore, Jo Ann Stores and Hobby Lobby. Additionally, Simply Soft can be ordered on-line at www.ShopCaron.com.<<
