small knitted drawstring bag

I just spent a half an hour looking for a free pattern for a small knitted drawstring bag. I used to have one, but lost that. Would like to use size 8 needles, and to make the holes for the drawstring, I can do a y/o. Do you have a free pattern for a drawstring bag?

Also, to be clear, the bag is supposed to measure about 7 inches tall, just a little bag, maybe to put a little toy inside.

Were I planning to make a drawstring bag and couldn’t find a pattern I like I would look at hat patterns. Modify the top to be flat and add the yo holes for the drawstring, and voila! a bag. But that’s me. The plethora of hat patterns in mind boggling.

The modified hat is a good idea. Ravelry also has several patterns in various sizes if you search “small drawstring bag knit”. You can modify the size as you prefer.

I made small bags for gift bags. The bags got returned for refills.

How in the world did I miss these? My search words must have been wrong. I have seen the scrap bag, but I’m going to try to knit “Small Pouch” handmade by Hev.

I want to make a little something for someone who was a wonderful help when my dog was sick, and dying.

If you have time, will you list a few of the hat patterns you would use to turn into a bag?I’m not real creative, but I can follow a pattern.

I don’t know what patterns I might use. It would depend on what I had in mind. Colorwork? Cables? Something else? I could help with pattern searching but would need some idea of what you might like.

That’s a great idea! I think I’ll try that. Yet again, I’ve learned something from this site.

Oh, something quick and simple, maybe some simple patterning. Something small, too. I wonder if a baby hat would make a drawstring bag? Like I said, I’m not creative, but I can follow most patterns.

Why not? Using thinner yarn will make any pattern smaller and often it’s easy to use fewer stitches.

Linen stitch makes a nice bag. I searched for worsted weight yarn thinking if you use dk it will be smaller. Fingering would be a lot smaller. You could do your eyelet round after the rib. Linen stitch can be worked in one color, of course.

eta I see no preview. In case it never shows, here’s a photo from the pattern page.

Very nice. Funny thing, I was looking on youtube for a knitted drawstring pattern, and I watched this all the way through “How to knit an easy drawstring pouch/bag” by Counting Rows, (can’t get the link to paste in here) and it 's basically a knitted hat, because she decreases at the end just like you do when you decrease a regular hat. Just thought you’d be interested. Sorry I can’t paste the link.

Yep! You’ve got it! :collision: :+1: Do you like that one? I like that yarn she used.

I didn’t watch the video, I admit it. I’ve done simple bags using a closed cast on like for socks worked toe up. Knit to desired length, work an eyelet round, work a few more rounds and bind off. Totally seamless.

Now that I’m knitting one, I see how simple they are. Time for some coffee!
