I’m new to this forum and not too sure how this all works. I do have a question however and hope someone can help me. I’m making a shawl - 15" X 60 and want to slip stitch the ends. The pattern is a simple stockenette stitch. Do I slip knitwise on the first knit on the knit side and knit to the end? And then slip purlwise on the first purl on the purl side? I had been doing that but the purl slips seem more enlongated that the knit slips.

Not exactly sure if I know what you’re talking about here, but I hate to see a question go unanswered, LOL.
Whenever I slip a stitch I generally do it purlwise, unless told to do it knitwise. That way it’s still sitting correctly and not twisting.
HOpefully somebody else will chime in though with some more insight.
Many gals seem to slip stitch the first stitches of every row for scarve, etc. so they have a nice edge. I’m just confused if you slip knitwise on the knit side of stockinette and slip purlwise on the purl side. Something seems just a little off when I do it that way, unless I don’t draw the purl slips tight enough before I start purling across. Make sense?
Everyone says that you are supposed to slip stitches purlwise, but I slip then knitwise on a knit row and purlwise on a purl row. I dont see any difference… maybe someone can answer better than i can. :shrug: good luck. 
I hope the pattern calls for a garter stitch border around it otherwise the edges will curl if it is all stockinette.
I think whatever looks best to you is what works best. Personally I slip as if to purl (with yarn in front) on any stitch and knit the last one. That makes a nice chained look edge on both sides.
Thank you. So on the entire purl row purl but the last stitch you knit. Then turn and first stitch slip as to purl and knit on the knit side to the end. You know what I did … I frogged what I had done and just knit the knits and purled the purls and will go around the outside when completed with a crochet slip stitch or a single crochet to give the edge a nicer look and some structure, but the next project I’ll do the slips. Whatever you decide to do…just [I]do it[/I] [I]consistently[/I] all the way up.
My girlfriend is a crosstitcher. She crosses her stitches the wrong way. BUT…she does them ALL THE WRONG WAY…and in the end…her crosstitch looks just fine and dandy.
