Welcome to KnittingHelp!
The informal rule is to slip purlwise unless it’s a decrease. When knitting a decrease, slip knitwise. That’s of course, unless your pattern directs otherwise.

Thank you kindly, for the warm welcome. I can’t express how thankful I am for the information, salmonmac, you’re an angel. This is my first attempt at knitting anything resembling a stocking (sock) and I’ve frogged that darned heel twice but couldn’t get it to look right. Thank you again, sooo very much.

Joz,
I’m looking for a flat knit Christmas stocking that is seamed after knitting (for a friend). Do you have a link to this pattern?

Thanks,
Barbara

@hit Can you help out with a link to the Christmas stocking pattern?

blulow, Have you tried searches in Google or on Ravelry for Christmas stockings knit flat? Some of the ones listed as knit flat are really in the round but there are patterns out there.
We’ll see if the original poster gets back with the pattern name.

This one does list only straight needles and knit flat.

Hope you find one you like if not this one.

salmonmac - yes, I’ve been looking through a bunch on Ravelry. You are so right that so many of them are knit flat to start, but then switch to the round at the heel

Creations - yep - bookmarked that one.

Next step is to go through the bookmarked patterns I found and choose something she’ll be able to do.

Thanks!
Barbara
