Slip Stitch 1st stitch purlwise with yarn in back?

Hello!

Beginner’s question on a ribbed scarf pattern…I’m suppose to slip stitch purlwise the first stitch in each row with the yarn in back and for some reason that is totally confusing me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!!!

Slipping a stitch is just moving it from the left needle to the right without knitting it. Most of the time you slip a stitch purlwise unless it’s part of a decrease (ssk or skp), or if the pattern says different so it won’t be twisted on the next row. Keep the yarn to the back of your work so there won’t be a yarn strand across the front of the stitch.

If you are using this on the edge stitch it makes a very nice straight edge. I’m doing this on the bibs I am making and it looks great!

WYIB is first. Move the yarn in the position as if you were doing a knit stitch. Keep it there and them slip one stitch from left needle to right needle as if you were going to purl it.

I am using this edge stitch on my Wingspan project and it is purrfect! I am following the directions, although it was not indicated whether to slip with the yarn in back or in front. It is a garter stitch pattern; do you think if I were to just knit the first stitch, would it not be as clean of an edge?

I’d suggest trying a few rows each way (you could swatch it) and see which you prefer.

I’ve been resisting swatching for a while now, sigh  seems like I did nothing but swatch for months. Alas, time to return to it. Guess I could try out some new stitch patterns :cheering:

You no like swatching? That’s sacrilege! :roflhard: I don’t like it either. You could make a dish cloth and try the different methods on the edge. When you get bored with sl 1 wyif and sl 1 wyib, you might find something else to try here. OK, OK, that’s more than you want right now. :teehee:

Dang girl, that’s 9 minutes 34 seconds of film  Just kidding :roflhard: Thanks for the link.

innocent eyes That’s just the first of her videos on edge stitches. There’s more! Yeah, I knew it was overkill, but it’s a handy link. Lately I’m playing with icord edgings. I won’t give you any links for those, I’ll be nice for a change.

If your shawl has a diagonal edge, I can’t tell from pics I’ve seen, I think you might be happier with a slipped stitch. Just sayin’.
