Sleeves - pick up?

Hi! Me again. Could someone decipher this line for me:
“move the sts from waste yarn to dpns - beginning at centre of underarm, join yarn and pick up and knit 5 sts, knit 36 sts, pick up and knit 5 sts, placem. for BOR.”

I have moved the stst from waste yarn to dpns. I know how to join yarn, but what does “pick up” mean? I’ve found videos on this site but it doesn’t make sense for where I’m at with my pattern.

Thanks in advance!

This sounds like a top down knit? Pick up the sts just as the video shows. Ii might be easier to pick these up with the working dpn and then continue with the 36sts that you’ve moved from the holder. The sts should be picked up starting at the center of the underarm (this should be above the side seam). After you’ve knit the 36sts, pick up 5 more sts on the other side of the center underarm. You’ll be knitting the sleeve in the round with an extra 10sts picked up at the underarm

Hi Salmonmac. Thanks, but I’m still confused as to what “picking up” stitches mean. Especially when the stitches I’m working with have been on a waste yarn. I put those stitches from the waste yarn on the dpns and now i don’t know what to do.

This part confuses me:
“Ii might be easier to pick these up with the working dpn and then continue with the 36sts that you’ve moved from the holder.”

I’m new to knitting so apologies for not understanding.
Thanks1

It’s not a problem. I can see where this might be confusing. You have 36sts on the dpns now for the sleeve. If you join those sts to knit in the round, you’ll have a gap at the underarm. The pattern wants you to pick up sts at the lower side of the arm opening and these sts will fill in that gap.
You’ll pick up 10sts total and the pattern is directing you to pick up 5sts on each side of the side seam (or where the side seam would be). Either wait to take the sts off the holder or ignore those sts. Pick up 5sts with another needle, say the working needle (usually the 4th needle). The 5sts are picked up between the side seam and the first of the held sts. Then knit the sts that were on the holder. When you come to the end of the sts on the holder immediately pick up 5 more sts between the last held st and the side seam to complete the round.
If this doesn’t make sense, I’ll try a drawing, but I warn you, it’s not my forte.

You’re saved! Look what I found. A video for it. :stuck_out_tongue:
picking up the sleeves on a raglan sweater

I get it! Now I understand. Thanks for taking the time to explain! So helpful.

Thanks for the video! I just might be able to finish my daughter’s dress!

Great, skimmy!
Many thanks for saving us all from “the drawing”, GG.

You’re welcome. I knew I couldn’t explain it. I also knew I couldn’t draw it. Desperate times call for desperate measures so I tried searching for pick up and knit stitches sweater sleeve on youtube and was pleasantly surprised. I have to try the way she does the BO-like thing instead of a regular decrease to get rid of the extra stitches.
