Sl1 wyif K1 sl1 wyib?

I know how to slip, I know how to k1, I know what Wyif and wyib means… but put them all together… well different story.

The pattern is a sock on the heel flap.

first row is RS- Sl 1 wyif ???----so I put the yarn in front THEN sl1… or do I slip 1 then put the yarn in front but then the next stitch is to Knit . so it must be put the yarn in front then Sl…

Then I knit 1
Sl 1 with wyib?? on this one I have to sip frist then put the yarn in back… becasue the next stitch is sl 1 and I need the yarn in the back…

is there a easier way to do this? it just seem to like the yarn is going over and back. Do I need to do this?

[COLOR=Black]You will start off with your yarn in front, just like you would have if you were purling a row. With yarn in that position, slip one stitch from the left to the right needle. Next knit 1, slip one with yarn in back and repeat between the … across. So for the part between the … your yarn will stay in the back the whole time and you will alternate between knitting one stitch and slipping one stitch.

This is very typical of a sock heel flap. Half of the stitches will be slipped on every right side row. It makes the flap more reinforced somehow.

The sl1 wyif at the beginning of RS rows just makes a nice slipped stitch edge along the heel flap because you will be picking up stitches later on to form the gusset.

Move the yarn to the front, slip the st, then you’ll have to move it back for the k1 and leave it there for the next slip st, then you have a knit, then another slip with the yarn still left to the back. Most instructions are put into a pattern for a reason though you may not understand why for a few more rows.

I think the wyib is what is throwing me off… I think I got it now… I have done a pair of sock before and have done it that way but the way this pattern is writing is just not making since to me… But thanks guy I think I know how to do it now.

They just specify the ‘wyib’ to differentiate from how the row starts with the yarn in front.

I am starting my first big girl scarf. I have made a few other ones but just casting on and only knitting but I decided to use a pattern that uses multiple colors of yarn. I have taught myself how to knit from books and the internet so there are a few things I need to learn some more terms to finish this scarf and grow up in the knitting world

I have a couple questions
can someone help with this instruction
-with yarn in back, sl 1, knit across -----
-with yarn in front, sl 1, knit across -----

also what is the easiest way to add a new color
the scarf has three colors and many stripes

That’s just telling you to slip the first stitch each row, one with the yarn in front of your work, the other row with the yarn in back, then you knit the rest of the sts on the row. To change colors, drop the 1st one, leaving a tail on the 2nd color begin to knit with it. Usually you work 2 or 4 rows with a color, then change, and so you drop the one you’ve been using and knit with the other one, loosely twisting one around the other on the side where you change them.
