I am having trouble understanding this instruction at the end of a row. If I have one stitch remaining on left needle am I to bring yarn to the front and then slip the stitch to the right needle and thats it? Then when I start the new row, the instruction is to knit first st tbl. Just seems weird but that is probably because I have never encountered it before. Pattern is Sweet Dreams Blanket in Ravelry.
Yes, just do as it says. This is one way of doing a slip stitch edge.
Is it one of these?
Yes it is sweet dreams blanket by Cindy Adams. I picked it because I have some very soft Carons bulky colour varying yarn that should look very pretty. Thank you for your advice. I just find it weird to start a row with an unknitted stitch but I guess that is why the yarn is behind and a tbl stitch is done. Something new to me.
I’ve never done it that way myself but I know others do. I’m not even sure what the edge looks like with this technique. If the yarn is left at the front of the work to slip the stitch it will wrap around to make the first stitch. I’ve done similar but at the beginning of the row. I was new to slip stitch edges and didn’t quite get it.
I don’t think the yarn wraps that slipped stitch, initially I did think this when I read it but if you think again, after turning the work for the next row the yarn is now in the back and works the first stitch in the back loop so that slipped stitch turns as it is worked (and draws it a little closer to the second stitch, i think).
I never do a slipped stitch edge but they do look very attractive.
I think it’s a way of making a mock i-cord edge!
I will do a few more rows and take a picture. Thanks everyone!
The other thing thats got me wondering about this pattern is the 74 stitch cast on. I am using Caron Lovely Layers Latte Cakes and it says it is bulky (5) . Gage is 15 stitches per 4 inches with #10 needles. (Not worried about length, just width). By my calculations I need at least 122 stitches (increments of 4) to get 32 inches width. Quite out of whack I would say. Am I missing something?
Hmm, the gauge on ravelry is listed as 10 sts per 10cm which would make it wider.
The yarn although it says it is bulky seems thinner than DK. I think that is the problem. If I just increase the cast on stitches I should be fine? I really just want to make a stroller blanket for a newborn so it probably doesn’t have to be 32” wide either.
Although the gauge for the yarn in stockinette stitch is 15/4" the gauge for the blanket is given at 10sts/4" in pattern stitch. Because of all the yarn overs the gauge in pattern stitch is going to be fewer sts/inch.
It might save time if you try a good sized swatch in the pattern stitch. There’s a bit of leeway because this is a blanket but you’d still like to be close to size.
I would recommend the swatch in pattern too. Lots of people don’t like to make a swatch but it’s so helpful for measuring. The pattern probably pulls out a lot and also when you wash it it can change size too.
You could always turn the swatch into something, a bottle bag to hang on the stroller for mum or dad to have their drink in, or a wipes bag, or somewhere to stash a spare muslin square or whatever.
so if I do a swatch in pattern do I have to do the 8 rows of knitting to begin
I don’t know what others do but I usually do a row or 2 of knitting before I start a pattern stitch or look for part of the pattern that is the plainest row to start on, but the main thing is to do it big enough to get away from those early rows and the edges of the swatch to measure. My recent swatches are 25 cm wide and wider if that helps. I can measure in several different places without going near the edge and still count across 10cm or 4 inch.
You’ll get a much better idea of how many stitches to cast on after you wash and dry the swatch and see how it will really be once in use.
Am I missing something or is the pattern wrong? Row 2 of the body has me doing k4 followed by p4 & yo but row three is asking me to drop yo from previous row after k4. There is no yo there because of the previous rows p4? Am i reading that eight and if so what is the best way to fix it?
The pattern works out with the yarn over from the previous row immediately after the first 5sts of row 3.
Row 2 Five edge sts (p4, yo) repeat to last 5 edge sts.
When you turn to start row 3, you’ll see Row 2 from the back side ready to work row 3
Five edge sts (yo, p4) repeat to last 5 edge sts.
On Row 3 you work the 5edge sts followed by the: drop yo from the previous row etc.
Give it a try with a few repeats on a small swatch if this isn’t clear.
Thanks, i screwed up and was working the wrong side when I should have been on righg side so thats why it was messing up. Its a soft furry yarn and hard to see the stitches. They are not well defined like with a worsted acrylic. But it all made sense when I looked closer. Thanks for your help.
