Skylark Pattern help

I have started out making the skylark cardigan by Martin Storey. My friend and I are having a hard time figuring out what this part of the pattern means.
Next row (WS): Patt 0 3: 0: 4: 0, (P2tog) 0 3: 2: 3: 3 times, patt 3, (P2tog) twice, patt 2, (P2tog) 3 times, patt 3, (P2tog) twice, patt 2, rep from to last 1 10: 5: 11: 7 sts, (P2tog) 0 3: 2: 3: 3 times,
patt 1 4: 1: 5: 1. 108 120: 132: 142: 154 sts.

It is a 15 stitch pattern over 6 rows. Can someone please explain what Patt 3, Patt2, Patt 1 means?
I would really appreciate it. Thanks and have a blessed day.
Kim

Welcome to the forum!

Another lovely Martin Storey pattern. Which size are you making?
Pattern 1,2 or 3 (patt 1,2 or 3) refers to the number of sts to work in the given pattern stitch. This stitch pattern might be the twisted stitch but that should be set up in an earlier row.
For example for the last directions at the end of the row:
… to last 1 10: 5: 11: 7 sts, (P2tog) 0 3: 2: 3: 3 times,
patt 1 4: 1: 5: 1. 108 120: 132: 142: 154 sts.

For the first size it becomes:
… to last 1 sts, (P2tog) 0 times, patt 1.
So you’re working the pattern stitch (maybe a twisted stitch?) once. (Anytime there is a 0 for your size skip that directions and go to the next.)

For the second size it becomes:
… to last 10 sts, (P2tog) 3 times, patt 4.
So you’re working the pattern stitch 4times. Added to the 6sts required for the P2tog worked 3 times that accounts for the 10sts.

Where are you in the pattern? On the rib for the hem on the back, on a sleeve?

I am making size 2 and I am on the back. I just started the 15 stitch pattern. When you say work the pattern stitch 4 times does that mean the 1st four stitches of the 15 stitch pattern?
Thank you so much for your help. It is quite confusing.

There must be a row before this WS row that establishes the pattern. This row is telling you to continue that pattern. If it’s twisted sts or cables that’s the pattern stitch to follow.
The decrease row that you quoted may be at the transition from the hem pattern to stockinette. You can quote that RS row or the initial row if you’d like. Just don’t give us a large portion of the pattern due to designer copyright.
For the 2nd size:
Next row (WS): Patt 3 (P2tog) 3 times, patt 3, (P2tog) twice, patt 2, * (P2tog) 3 times, patt 3, (P2tog) twice, patt 2, rep from * to last 10, (P2tog)3 times,
patt 4. (120 sts)
The sts between the asterisks are a 15sts repeat which becomes 10sts after the row is worked.

BACK

Using 3Âľmm (US 5) needles cast on 160 [178: 198: 210: 232] sts.

Beg and ending rows as indicated, repeating the 15 st patt rep

10 [11: 12: 13: 14] times across each row and repeating the 6 row

patt rep, work in patt from chart for back as folls:

Work 41 rows, ending after chart row 5 and with WS facing for

next row.

Next row (WS): Patt 0 [3: 0: 4: 0], (P2tog) 0 [3: 2: 3: 3] times, patt

3, (P2tog) twice, patt 2, *(P2tog) 3 times, patt 3, (P2tog) twice, patt

2, rep from * to last 1 [10: 5: 11: 7] sts, (P2tog) 0 [3: 2: 3: 3] times,

patt 1 [4: 1: 5: 1]. 108 [120: 132: 142: 154] sts.

Thanks for helping me with this.

Thank you for the information.
This is the established pattern, the rib and the cables. You’ve been working this already. Beginning with the second stitch as indicated for the 2nd size in the chart you’ve worked the 41 rows and are now on a WS row to work the decreases. For the decrease row, work 3sts from the chart (blue dots), then work p2tog 3 times (red lines) over the next 6sts of the chart, then 3sts from the chart and p2tog 2 times over the next 4sts. Continue in this way to work the sts of the chart, purling the sts together as needed.

It may help to use markers here to mark off the 15 stitch repeat and help you keep track of where you are in the chart.

The alternative way to work this is to use the earlier rows where you have worked the pattern as you guide. Once you’ve worked the first 3sts of the chart then p2tog 3times, look to the rows below to tell you how to work the next 3sts.

If this is a transition row to stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) it’s also possible if this becomes to confusing to work the “Patt” sts as purl sts on this WS row. You’ll be changing to stockinette anyway as the pattern continues (I’m guessing here).

Thank you so much!!! I would have never figured it out. You are a knitting wizard. I hope you have a blessed weekend.
