Sirdar knitting 3191 help

I am trying a bonnet. It says yrn p1 p3tog p1 yon. I end up with too many stitches. Anyone advise what I’m doing wrong. Thanks

What pattern are you using? How many stitches do you start with and how many are you supposed to end up with?
yrn p1 p3tog p1 yon
yrn and yon mean yo so you’re increasing two but decreasing two with p3tog so the count for this part should stay the same.

Do you know how to do ptog more easily? I can find a video if you wish. I would probably slip the 3 sts to the other neede, lay the yarn over the needle tip then pass the 3 stitches over the yarn one at a time. Or p1, move the new stitch to the left needle and pass the next 2 over, move new stitch to right needle.

Thanks I’m still getting too many stitches after first row. D
So the YRN is causing the problem. I’ve looked at videos and think I have it right but clearly not.

How many stitches do you have to start and how many when you’re done?

I think this is your pattern.

Placing markers for repeats might help. What precisely is the repeat? There should be something between yon and yrn. The photo in this project looks like a knit in between. ETA I looked again and now I’m less sure there’s a column of knits.

Can you quote the entire row that the yon occurs in please?
How many sts are you getting?
Don’t give us a large portion of the pattern due to designer copyright. Just the first row is enough.

Hello yes. I’m casting on 73 stitches then

S 1 *YRN p1 p3tog p1 YO n k1 continue to endp

From the first sl1 I bring the wool to purl position then wrap it round the needle and purl then the yon it’s followed by a knit. But I end up with more stitches so I must be adding too many with the yrn and yon. I can’t get it right

You don’t mention doing the p3tog, which should remove those 2 added stitches each time, so it looks like you should end with the same number you start with.

You start with 73–how many are you supposed to end with?

For the YRN bring the yarn to the front between the needles then over the right needle to the back and around to the front again ready to work the p1.
For the YO the yarn is in the front after finishing a p1, bring it to the back over the right needle and then k1. Don’t pull the yarn too tightly over the needle here. You don’t want to pull on that prvious purl one.

I wonder if rewording it might help-
s1, *yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo, k1

I find yrn, yon, yfwd confusing but that might simply be because I knit Continental and I manipulate the yarn differently than a thrower does. I also like fewer letters in my abbreviations making them easier for me to decipher.

Thank you all for the help. I finally sussed it. I was wrapping yon too many times and it was giving extra stitches
