Sirdar #5553

Hi, My name is Regina and I have been knitting for many years.
I recently knitted a baby blanket and crocheted another blanket for my niece who gave birth to twins (boy & girl). Then I knitted another baby blanket for my other niece who had a baby girl.

Now - I am going back to a sweater I started a few years ago that I would like to finish. The pattern is SIRDAR #5553.
I have the back and front all done. Now, I just have to knit the sleeves.
I am making size 38. I cast on 31 stitches and worked the 1 x 1 rib for 2 inches. Then I increased to 37 stitches.

Then I changed to larger needles and proceeded as follows:
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: *Purl 1, Knit 1, Repeat from * to last stitch, Purl 1.

1st and 2nd Rows set pattern.

So, I did all the above as stated in the pattern.
Then the instructions say:
Keeping continuity of pattern as set throughout, increase 1 stitch at each end of next and every following 6th Row to 61 stitches, working increases in pattern.
Well, when I did all of the above for a few inches, I looked at the right side and it did not look right - so I ripped out to the ribbing.

My question is: When I am increasing 1 stitch each end (on Row 1 of pattern) the next row is Purl 1, Knit 1.
When I come to Row 2 of the pattern after increasing each end on Row 1 of pattern, on Row 2 of pattern should I start with Purl 1, Knit 1 or should I start with Purl 2, Knit 1?
Sorry for the long post. I really would appreciate if anyone could help.
Thank you.

Hi. Welcome to KH. You might want to put this in a thread of its own, How To Questions would be a good place. It’s likely to get missed here. I don’t have a solution for you.

Welcome to the forum!
You want the pattern to line up even though you’re adding sts at the ends. After the first increase, row 2 will start with a k1 and continue p1, k1.
The best way to see this is to look on the right side and make sure the pattern is lining up as it should. That’ll help you figure out how to start on the succeeding rows.
(Thanks GG for suggesting the move.)

Thanks, I will try your solution for the sleeve.

Thanks salmonmac. I tried your solution for the sleeve and it looks better.:cheering:
