I have some lovely yarn that I want to use for mittens. The gauge is 4 1/2 st/in on US 8’s (If I go much lower than that on DPN needles my hands ache). All the patterns I have and have found on the web call for size 2-3’s DPNs. Any suggestions?
Are the mittens for an adult or a child?
Ann Norling Basic Mittens on 4 Needles - For adults and children. This one is good because you can choose to do it with a gauge of 4, 5 or 6 stitches per inch.
Kathy’s Mittens - for small children
If you wanted to do felted mittens, you’d be able to do them on larger needles. I’ve used the Fiber Trends Snow Country Felt Mitten pattern. It’s sized for youth, ladies and men.
Did you browse through the patterns at Knitting Pattern Central?
I made some mittens with this pattern.

It calls for size 4 needles, but maybe you could improvise?
I love this mitten pattern from Knitty Gritty

The thumb is soooooo much easier than most mitten patterns
Thanks for all these Ideas. I found a couple of patterns I like and am marrying them together.
