Shaping front argyle sweater

http://magknits.com/May06/patterns/argyle.htm this is my pattern. It says; Shape right armhole and v-neck: (rs) keeping stitch pattern correct, cast off 3sts at beg of next row. Work 36sts and leave rem sts on holder. Turn work so WS is facing. Each side of front is worked separately.
Work 1 row without shaping. (rs) dec 1sts at armhole edge of next 3 rows, then on foll 3 alt rows. AT THE SAME TIME dec 1st at neck edge of each RS row until 13sts rem. Ok here are my questions.
After casting off 3sts and working 36sts I have 40 sts left on the needle so I put the 40 sts on the holder right?
When it says to dec 1st at armhole edge on next 3 row, then on foll 3 alt rows- I should dec one st on row 1, 2, 3, 5,7,9 only at armhole edge and at the same time dec 1st every RS row only not WS until I have 13sts left? Do I have it all right?

:happydance: By jove, you’re getting it!!

:happydance: Thanks! I am slow getting started but soon I will come around to understanding more.

I forgot to ask you which way I should join the new yarn for the other side of the neck shape. Should I just take the new yarn and start knitting with it and after weave the tail in the back or knit with the tail for three stitches tight so I don’t have to weave the tail in. The reason why I ask is because it is at the neck and I was wondering if knitting with the tail will be more noticable because it is thicker and weaving in after using duplicate stitch would be too hard because it is knits and purls. What do you think?

I would knit with the two strands for a few stitches. You’ll be picking up the stitches around the neck for the neckband, so it won’t be noticeable.

when I worked the back shaping for the shoulder it said to knit to 7.5" then it had me working 4 more rows of casting off then casting off rem sts. When I am working the front I am to knit to 7.5" but then it only has me working three rows until I co rem sts. That is because they want me on the one side right? They pattern says to shape armhole until measures 7.5" ending with a WS row. THen it says (RS) cast off 6 sts at beg of foll row. Work 1 row without shaping. cast off rem sts. Am I to knit to 7.5" ending with a WS row then knit (RS) row keeping pattern and then cast off 6 sts(WS) at beg of that row? So I am actually casting off on the WS row. Why did they not say work a row without shaping then cast off next row? Am I reading it right?

It comes back to needing to bind off at the beginning of a row. On the shoulder that will be on your left as you wear it, you’ll bind off on the right side. For the right shoulder, you’ll bind off on the wrong side.

The shoulder that I am working on now (the first one) says right shoulder but in fact is my left as I wear it. I thought patterns usually said right shoulder meant right as you wear it dont they? Anyway, that means I am not understanding it right  Where it says shape right shoulder(RS) cast off 6 sts at beg of foll row. Do they mean cast off on the right side(first row) NOT at the beg of foll row? Then work 1 row then cast off rem sts. I am mixed up, should I not be working at least 3 rows to match the back that has 4 rows?
