Shape Neck

Hi I am making a baby cardigan I have got to the part we’re it says shape neck I need to cast off 4 and purl to the end then it says work 2 rows dec 1 st at neck edge in every row I’m working on the left front hope you can help me

Welcome to KH!
For the left front the cast off of 4 sts is likely the armhole edge.
Call the cast off of 4sts row 1 and purl to the end of the row.
Turn and dec 1 stitch on row 2 then work to the end of the row.
Turn and work across row 3 to the neck edge where you decrease 1 stitch.
You can work the decreases one or two sts before the ends of the rows if you like.

What is the name of your pattern?

Thank you so much for your help my pattern is called super soft baby dk number 3102 sirdar double knitting

Maybe this one:

That’s very sweet. Enjoy working the rest of the pattern.

It’s the left front (left as you would wear the sweater)? The cast off then purl to the end of row sounds more like the right front on this pattern.

I have made the back I’m just onto the left front I’m making the round neck cardigan with ribbed edge I’m nearly down to the shape Neck I really hope I can do this I have never made a cardigan before would love to be able to do this Thankyou so much for your help

How do you Dec 1 stitch please?

https://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/decreases

The first link has a variety of decreases. The second also has a variety and perhaps easier to go straight to the one you want. It also has a video (scroll down to near the end)

In short it depends if you are on a knit or purl side of the work and which way you want the decreases stitch to lean.
I use ssk (slip knit wise, slip purl wise, return both to the left needle and knit both together through the back loop) at the beginning of a right side knit row.
I use k2tog at the end of a right side knit row.

Ssp or p2tog on a wrong side or purl row.

If it all sounds too confusing you can just k2tog (or purl 2 together) which is what I did when I started knitting and no one has ever noticed.

It says work 5 rows dec 1 st at neck edge in next and every foll alt row what does that mean

Is this after the part salmonmac gave row instructions on?

The next row is the first decrease at the neck edge call this row 1
Then
Every foll alt means every other row
Row 2 work without dec
Row 3 this is the alternate row so decrease at neck edge
Row 4 work without dec
Row 5 this is the next alt row so dec at neck edge

Thankyou so much

Do I decrease at the beginning of the 1st row

Rather than advise on this from isolated directions, it’ll help us help you if you give us the directions from the cast off for the armhole to the end of the shoulder on this front. You can post a photo of just this portion of the pattern please using the landscape icon in the middle top of the Reply box. We can’t post a large section of a pattern due to designer copyright but this section should be ok.

Does this look ok

That looks just fine. It’s lovely knitting and a pretty pattern.
Now if you can post a photo of the directions for this front that would be helpful. If the cast off of 4 sts is the armhole edge then this is the right front (right as you would wear the cardigan).

I’m working on the left front

OK, here’s a drawing that may help. Scroll down about halfway to the 3rd diagram.

Regardless if you can post the directions for the front, we can help you.

Perfect.

So if you call the cast off row, row 1 then decrease one at the neck edge of rows 2 and 3 then on rows 4,6 and 8. A k2tog as Creations suggested is a good decrease as it follows the line of the neck.

I see my confusion. The cast off of 4sts is for the neck not the armhole. Sorry for the mix up.
