I am a beginner and trying to work my way through Debbie Bliss baby garter stitch jacket, which I thought would be an easy start. That was until I came to the following instructions on the back, shaping neck:
Next 2 rows knit 26 Sl1 yf turn sl1 knit to end
I did attempt what I thought might be right after much contemplation but didn’t look right so undid the work ![]()
I am bewildered and would appreciate any help to be able to get going again
Welcome to the forum!
It’s a modified kind of short row. The yarn is in back because you’re working in knit stitch. Slip stitch 27 from the left needle to the right. Slip purlwise, that is as thought you were going to purl. then bring the yarn strand to the front between the needles. Turn by switching the needles in your hands, slip stitch 27 to the now right hand needle and continue knitting.
You’re going to be shaping a part of the sweater by adding more rows in one area than the other.
Thank you so much for your time and advise. So am I right in thinking the knitting will look lopsided?
Or am I still very confused???
You’ve got the right idea. It will be lopsided in a sense but that turn for short rows may occur on both sides. This often happens in patterns to lift the back so that the sweater fits correctly.
It won’t be noticeable in the finished sweater. What part of the sweater are you knitting?
The back ……… all was going well until I reached Shape neck ![]()
So I left it while I kept thinking about it and tried to find clarity on YouTube. Until now, I was no further forward with the back but I have finished the sleeves ![]()
Still not completely sure but I’m going to give it a go.
I am out of my comfort zone but don’t want to give up on it.
I wish I could visualise it
The best way to think of it is as a way to lift the back of the neck. On the back there should be turns at each end before the end of the row so that there will be more rows in the middle portion of the back.
See solution 1 diagram in this tutorial and see if it helps.
You might add a lifeline in before you go any further just in case you need to rip back (I hope not!).
You are too kind Salmonmac. I thank you for sending me these tutorials and also opening my eyes to the ability to create a lifeline. I would never have known.
