I have a cardigan that I finished two months ago and I’ve been wearing it, but it still needs the buttons. Is it better to sew the buttons with leftover yarn, or matching thread or does it not really make a difference  :??

I would use matching thread. Unless your yarn is super thin, you probably wouldn’t be able to get it through most button holes.
That’s true…I hadn’t thought of that!

sometimes you can “un-ply” the yarn to make it thinner to use for buttons. that way you are sure it will match. but it depends on the type of yarn. if you have great big artsy buttons with big holes, the yarn could work.
I always use the orig yarn, unplied, so a perfect match. But I would consider using matching thread, such as embroidery floss OR needlepoint wool, if I found the yarn wanted to pull apart (esp if button is smallish). Also, good idea to use backer buttons so your RS button is more stable and there’s less stress/pull on the fabric.

Now that’s a GREAT idea ![]()
