Sewing a back seam?

Ok, so this is totally a “newbie” question, but how do you sew a back seam? I’ve worked pretty hard on this hat so I hate to mess it up now.

Thanks for the help!

Once again, here’s the link to the hat I’m working on.

Mattress stitch is the best seaming technique I know. Check out the videos in Basic Techniques/More/Finishing.

I looked at the mattress seam, but I don’t really understand how I’m supposed to do it.

I know that I need to thread a needle through to get the stitches off the knitting needle. After that, all it says is to sew a back seam. I’m not sure where I’m supposed to sew the end to.

Here is the link to the pattern, AGAIN:

Thanks!!

Now that you’ve pulled the yarn throught the stitches and taken them off the needle, you should have 2 edges coming from that center where you’ve just cinched everything together.

You want to sew those 2 edges together. you start a the top (where your yarn currently is from cinching) and work your way down those two edges. This makes up the back seam when you’re done.

Here is a link to the pictures. The top one is the RS, the bottom is the WS.

Thanks again.

So if you’re finished and don’t want to decrease anymore, cut the yarn about 12-18 inches from your knitting (or a little longer, just to make sure you have enough). Thread a tapestry/darning needle (not a regular sewing needle, you want a thick one with a blunt tip) with your yarn and pull it through each of the stitches on your knitting needle, slipping the stitches off it as you go. When the last stitch is off, pull the yarn tight through the stitches so they scruch up together. Take a stitch through your work to secure the yarn, then turn it so the RS is facing you and follow the directions for the mattress stitch.

Thanks guys! I think I finally figured it out… It really wasn’t too hard, I think I was just having a “brain fart”. =)
