Separate sleeves from body for contiguous sweater

This is my first contiguous sweater, and boy, I feel lost.

The pattern I’m knitting, croisière sweater, has you place four markers down.

However, the instructions to separate the sleeves only include three instances of “rm”:

Place next X sleeve sts on hold, rm, CO Y sts , k until m, rm, place next X sleeve sts on hold, rm, **CO Y ** , k until the end, rm, k Z, pm for beginning of the round.

I have 53 stitches, then a marker, then I have 36 stitches, then a marker, 90, then marker, 29 stitches, then a marker, 43 stitches, then a marker.

If I were to use the first 53 stitches for a sleeve and then rm and CO, the next sleeve would be only 36 stitches after the first sleeve…which can’t be right!

Is “rm” remove marker?

I see instructions to “rm and cast on Y stitches” right at the beginning of separating the sleeves (after you place stitches on hold), then the other 3 ‘rm’ come as you work around. I’m guessing Y changes with the sizes in the pattern?

Does the pattern give you numbers for the X,Y and Z stitch numbers for your size (sometimes a table with these numbers for each size)?
The 90sts are possibly front or back with the 43+53 (=96) as the back or front. Then the sleeves are the 29 and 36. It may be that the increases have gotten off somehow? Is it possible that 6 of the 96 should go on the sleeve that has 29sts? That would give you 90sts front and back with 36sts and 35sts for the two sleeves?

Maybe like this:
Place next 36 sleeve sts on hold, rm#1, CO Y sts , k 90 until m, rm#2, place next X sleeve sts on hold, rm#3, **CO Y ** , k43 until the end, rm#4, k53 , pm for beginning of round.

So with the numbers, the instructions to separate sleeves from body are:

Place next 53 sleeve sts on hold, rm, CO 10 sts , k until m, rm, place next 53 sleeve sts on hold, rm, **CO 10 ** , k until the end, rm, k 5, pm for beginning of the round.

I definitely have messed up somewhere, but I’m confused how!

The two sets of of repeats before separating for sleeves:
Round 7: m1L, k until m, m1R, sm, k until m, sm, m1L, k until m, m1R, sm, k until the end.

Round 8: k until the end.

work rounds 7 and 8 a total of nine times

I interpreted round 7 as:

The last repeat:

Round 9: m1L, k until m, m1R, sm, k2, m1L, k until 2 sts before m, m1R, k2, sm, m1L, k until m, m1R, sm, k2, m1L, k until 2 sts before end, m1R, k2.

Round 10: k until the end.

Work rounds 9 and 10 a total of 6 times.

I interpreted round 9 as:

Now looking at those instructions, I only see “sm” or slide marker three times. Maybe I interpreted the row to join in the round incorrectly:

Row 5 (RS): k until m, sm, m1L, k until m, m1R, sm, k until m, sm, m1L, k until m, m1R, sm, k until the end, CO 15 (15, 17, 17, 17) (17, 19, 19, 21) sts and join in the round , k until the first m of the left shoulder. This marker is now the beginning of the round. You will now work the body in the round.

But in that row 5, there are still four “sm” right - so how did it only become three markers?

When your pattern refers to markers, it seems that it’s referring to the 4 markers (red dots) and not the BOR marker. The increases should be at the 4 markers that are at the joins of the sleeves to the back and front.

ETA:Ah ok, according to row 5 the new BOR marker is now the first marker. It’s shifted to the left sleeve join.

I don’t know why it’s not mentioned at the beginning of the round but the pattern seems to start off at that new BOR marker.

Thank you for the help!! I eventually finished my sweater, you wouldn’t know by looking at it I had to frog about 4 times and ended up needing to do sweater surgery as well for more length in the body. Wish I had a nicer photo but:

You’ve worked this out so neatly, matching the stripes and the invisible sweater surgery too!
