Have any of you ever taken this to staples/office-smax and had them put it into a spiral binding? I read about this on another list - thought it might be a good idea - but I hate to ruin my book if it isn’t!

That’s not a bad idea.
Though I would probably have them do three hole punch and get those rings that snap open and shut instead…too many holes to be punched in for spiral, I’d be concerned about it going over the words.
I was going to say be sure there’s enough room in the left margin. I would also take into consideration how much I paid for the book; if I wouldn’t mind paying that much again, I’d go for it.

there is lady at my LYS who did that with the “Knitters Stash” book. I think it is a grand Idea. I haven’t looked at the binding edge to see if there is enough room but they should be able to tell you for sure. You could also think about taking the idea of the three ring binder and find one that opens flat and put it in there.
oooh ooooh oooh and if you wanted to get reeeeeeeally crazy you could get the pages laminated so that you could write on them with a grease pen and then erase your markings when you are done.

I have had it done to several books that I use at school and I LOVE the way it makes using pages easier. One of the books I use often was coming apart at the binding and this “saved it”. I haven’t taken the time to do with any knitting books yet … hmmmm…

You definitely need to take it somewhere to be de-spined. I don’t understand why all knitting books aren’t spiral bound. You’d think the people working at knitting publishing companies would be knitters. :shrug:
I’m totally going to do that with my knitting-pattern-a-day calendar from last year…weed out the patterns I don’t like, then take it to Kinko’s to have it bound. 
Staples and office max or kinkos I think will do stuff like this…
I get this done all the time for Home school stuff.
It works to about $5 for an average sized book, with taxes. (I am Canadian, remember?)
Most office stores will do it. I strongly recommend the coil bound. It is very durable and very easy on your pages in the long run. Don’t be talked into the kind of binding that is like a comb. Very annoying!
The cost includes cutting the book up for you.
Also, they can make new covers if needed. And sometimes I print off a bunch of stuff, have them insert section dividers, and have it bound and self-publish books myself. Its very cheap in the long run!
