I have done a little brioche before but not all that familiar.
I want to make a rectangle knit flat then seamed with mattress stitch to make either wrist warmers of sweater cuffs. Should I work the edges any differently or just an even number of sts and work them all in brioche?
I’m doing a swatch at the moment and also wondering what cast on and bind off might be nicest for this.
You could work an edge stitch each side to use for seaming. Then you can seam between the edge and the brioche.
Are you going to add a rib to the cuff? That may help determine the best cast on and bind off.

No I’m not going to have a rib at the cuff, I’m using brioche instead of 1x1 rib as I was originally having all rib but this yarn looks awful in rib, very uneven lopsided stitches which I don’t usually get in my knitting, so brioche was a change of plan but it’s so lovely I’m glad the rib didn’t work out, brioche looks and feels much nicer.
It’s going to be maybe 20cm long to cover hand wrist and a bit of forearm and either be worn under the sleeve of a sweater it goes with or be sewn onto the sleeve as a permanent layer.

Yes, the idea is that the stockinette will disappear into the seam and brioche will continue across the wrist warmers.

I have a sleeve with a raw stockinette edge and want to keep that without a cuff, but as i feel a chill if my sleeves aren’t snug i decided to add these long wrist warmers in a layering effect.
Mine will be in the same colour as the main colour of the sweater and i want them quite plain as the sweater body has lots of colorwork.

What sort of cast on and bind off do you recommend for this?
I like the sewn or Italian bind off and the tubular cast on.
The bind off is the third of the ones in this video. It’s shown at the beginning and demonstrated at about 6:50min in the video.
The tubular cast on that I find easiest is this one.
I mostly have knit sweaters with brioche so I had ribbing at the cuffs, welt and collar but the above look neat for brioche edges.
