Self patterning yarns

Currently I’m knitting a child’s hat using Hayfield Baby Blossom chunky yarn. It’s ok, but the pattern is not what I expected. It doesn’t look like this: 5572 Garland Cardigan by Sirdar – Wool and Company So, are there any self patterning yarns (to use on a size 8 needle) that would be cute for a baby hat, booties, and sweater? My 3rd great-grandchild is on the way, and she will be born around February. Any suggestions on self-patterning yarns?

Cute cardigan!
Self-patterning yarn is often designed for sweaters and items where the width is great enough to allow the pattern to show up. The pattern is going to look different between the sleeves, fronts and back too because of any difference in width.
You might use the self-patterning yarn for a sweater and then pick up a complementing color from the pattern for the booties and hat.

And congratulations on the third Great-grandchild! That’s wonderful news and cause for celebration (and of course, knitting).

Thank you! You have a wealth of knitting knowledge, for sure. :100: That’s a good idea about using a complementary color. I was wondering if the booties would end up looking mismatched, as that happens when knitting socks with patterned yarn, and I don’t like that. Thank you for the congratulations. Great grandkids…it seems like such a short time ago that I was helping the grandkids with homework and taking them to school, and getting them Happy Meals. Time flies, enjoy it while you can.
