Scottish thumb cast on (wraps twice around the thumb & adds a row)

Cheers all wondering if anyone might be able to help with a “cast on” apparently from Scotland, using your “THUMB” not certain how to start it, I think it wraps around the thumb twice but not necessarily knit into both strands and amazingly you knit a round/row at the same time as you cast on

Anyone who is aware of this cast on video i would greatly appreciate the share, I am not having much success at my attempts with needle and fiber lol maybe I am just too tired

Thanks in advance

Cheers to all

This is one way to describe the long tail cast on. It is basically a thumb loop and then the working yarn is pulled through that thumb loop. It’s a sturdy, popular cast on. Although some consider it the first row of knitting not everyone agrees.

This sounds interesting. Searching didn’t help. I did try a longtail cast on with a double thumb wrap but just a few stitches using my wip yarn. I’ll play with it more later. I think it could make a nice edge. Some people count a ltco as the first row so maybe this helps you in your quest.

Most likely the long tail cast on as others have said.

In this video Hazel Tindlen casts on with the long tail cast on but holds the yarn differently, wrapping the long tail around the thumb then knitting into it with yarn held in the right hand. I’ve never seen this method but I think I like it.

There is a (not Scottish) Channel Islands cast on which has a double wrap on the thumb and is traditional for Guernseys, maybe this is what you’re thinking of?

What method do you usually use?

Oh ok I totally thought it was something different I viewed a variation of it briefly, a Scottish Lady if memory serves, so fascinating yet I can’t recall where I found it I appreciate you taking the time also to accompany it with video, I do so much better with practical version very much appreciated

Aww thanks, what i recall, it was very fascinating, it looked very interesting I seach it, but to be honest my way of using words does not usually help, I get too wordy haha, anyway it was to no avail, I am not certain if the yarn wrapped outside the thumb or inside or if that would matter I have been driving myself nuts for a few months off & on, it appeared so easy, I thought I can remember this…At my age I need to stop lying to myself. I would be interested in any outcome thank you very much Gram

I am so grateful thank you

I might attempt that book mark, never “steek” (?) yet also first time I noticed heart  emoji thank you once again

I just found this one too. Its called double loop, it’s done on the fingers rather than the thumb but I imagine one can wrap anything twice and still produce the same result. Get past the first part because he demonstrates it a few ways so hang in there for a couple of minutes.

I’m going to save this one myself and try it out, it looks like a similar result (ish) to Judy’s surprisingly stretchy slip knot cast on which i like for its plainess and stretchiness but I dislike how the yarn twists and over a large number of stitches the yarn gets damaged by twisting.

I tried Hazel Tindel’s style of long tail, i prefered it but mine came out quite messy and uneven. Thanks for helping me discover these cast ons which I wasn’t aware of.

Search terms. I’m with you there! I often give up searching then stumble across it later when I’ve already done something else. You did the smart thing and asked. I have to try the co in the video.

I used the double loop today and liked it. I will say though that the demonstration by Nimble Needles, wrapping around the fingers, I found almost impossible. I can’t grip yarn in my left hand little finger (also my yarn is slippery bamboo and thinner end of DK weight) which made it too hard to keep tension and wrap my fingers so instead i wraped my thumb, yes double loop on the thumb, then pick up with needle. It was good. I like the result. Looks a bit long in the strand for the first row but after a couple of rows it is a very nice, a low key but stretchy cast on which doesn’t interfere with the gauge of the knitting. I cast on 119 sts so can also say it worked very well over this number without making nasty twists in the yarn.
I think i will use it again.
