Hi, I am knitting a scarf for a 9 year old and wonder how long it should be. I keep knitting more rows and now I have 39 inches (99cm) - will this be long enough please?

Scarf Length
Hello
I looked at a couple of freemscarf patterns for kids and both had 135cm for this age however, personally I’d prefer a scarf not too long for a child so it could go around the neck once and tuck into a coat rather than be wrapped fully around (fully around can be a danger in the play park) so perhaps the length you have now is preferable. Perhaps ask the parent what they’d prefer as they are usually the ones doing the health and safety check.
There are some nice free patterns for neck warmers which tuck smoothly into a coat, a bit like the top of a high neck sweater, you might want to try one of those for a future project. I just made one to match the sweater I made with the left over yarn.
Hi, thanks for the info. Yes, I think I will leave it at 99cm as by the time I put pompoms on the bottom edges it will be ok.
Good idea about neck warmers - I knit for 2 charities and think these would be ideal. Can they be knitted on 2 needles?

I just made one for myself knitting flat but didn’t follow a pattern. I did a rectangle of 2 x 2 rib wide enough to fit comfortably around the neck, like a polo neck or turtle neck, mine is long enough for it to be folded over, then I increased around kind of like a yolk for a section that would cover from neck band to overlap a sweater top and sit inside a coat, then i seamed it down the back. It was pretty basic and easy.
I can’t see a kids pattern immediately that’s knit flat just now though, most do the neck in the round and the front and back flat.
Hi, as you say most patterns for tots neck warmers use circular needles so I’ll try and work one out for 2 needles per your advice. I just cannot get to
grips with circulars.
Thanks for replying

There’s a free pattern here for a top mad flat and in sections, it would be possible to make just the top section of the top and the roll neck, to are something similar to the kids neck warmers I’ve seen. Ti be honest this is more complex than what I made for myself but I thought I’d oink it just in case it helps.
And here are some drops patterns, they are knit flat which I know you would like but I’m just linking so you can see the idea and perhaps you can adapt one or find a kids sweater and adapt to make just the top section flat and seamed.
Hi, many thanks for the patterns and ideas which I am sure I will be able to adapt and knit for tots - looking forward to the challenge.

I’m so sorry for my typing errors. I use a tablet which insists it knows better what to say but makes so many blunders!
Those kids patterns are NOT knit flat (which was my intended sentence earlier) but I inked them for an example of some neck warmers and size guides. You could adapt to flat, with help if needed.
Again, sorry about the typoes I’m afraid they are common in my replies here. No oink this time I hope.
Hi, yes I realised the typo errors not your fault.
Thanks for the info.
